Susan Canaday and her husband have been storing good household items for years, but realize now that there may be victims of recent wildland fires who could use them. They’re getting on in years, however; and when a large box fell on their heads in a storage unit recently, she said, they realized they could use some help sorting through what they’ve stored in order to give it away. Lady Raider Volleyball split the matches last week, losing at Liberty Bell Tuesday, but defeating Oroville at home Thursday. The Raiders travelled a long way to Mabton to play a team that is ranked highly in the state ,and played like it. The Mabton Vikings defeated Lake Roosevelt 65-14. “We continue to play hard,” Head Coach Geary Oliver said of his team’s performance. “Mabton is ranked sixth in the state, and for good reason.” Oliver noted a good performance from Jesse Louie. “Jesse Louie continues to run well and is one of our leading receivers,” he said. An effort to keep an American flag flying in an unlikely spot saw success last week as the stars and strips were hoisted proudly above Delano Friday. Anyone traveling between Delano and Electric City can see it to the south of the highway. It's easily the highest flag in the area. The Warden Cougars struck early and often on the Raiders Friday night, building a halftime lead that Lake Roosevelt could not overcome on their home field in Coulee Dam. Raider cross country travelled to Kettle Falls Saturday for the CAN-AM Invite, hosted by Colville High School. Wade Burnside’s DNA may remain in his apple trees. Burnside was a determined sort who loved deeply and acted on it, not necessarily in ways that were easily understood. But last Friday, standing amidst his legacy high above Delano, a glimmer of his spirit came through. A few months ago, we presented the community a gift of a 40-foot banner to hang in the high school. This banner was presented to honor the veterans of the Grand Coulee area. Next month we will take time to honor all of those who are serving and those who have served. It’s Veterans Day. Rotary Club members and friends gathered Wednesday, Sept. 23, to remember Donna Hamilton, in whose memory the club erected a plaque at the handicapped-accessible fishing pier the club installed at Steamboat Rock State Park. The gathering took place a year and a day after her unexpected death. In a press release sent about 5 p.m. Monday, Okanogan County Public Works said one bridge near Nespelem will be closed and another restricted on Tuesday. The Lady Raiders won in three after losing in three last week. On Manson’s home court, Lake Roosevelt lost in a three-game set Sept. 22 before defeating Tonasket in Coulee Dam Thursday in a three-game sweep. The match at Manson was disappointing as the Lady Raiders came out with poor energy, head coach Kasey Garvin said. “They came in with a very strong energy, and we had no energy,” she said. Raider Cross Country travelled to Spokane Valley to compete in the Runners Soul Erik Anderson Invitational last week. There were more than 300 runners present from all classifications of schools across Eastern Washington and North Idaho at the race. “Our boys’ and girls’ teams both pushed themselves very hard to compete in the race in Spokane against some very large schools,” Head Coach Gary Darnold said. Nearly a dozen agencies presented possibilities for long-term help to about 50 people affected by the fires on the Colville Indian Reservation, but none of them will be quick or easy.
