The Raiders were outplayed Friday by the Oroville Hornets in Oroville, losing 45-19. The loss dropped Lake Roosevelt to one win, two losses in league play and 1-6 overall. The Raiders sent only eight runners to Oroville, Saturday, where five Lake Roosevelt boys and three girls held their own as they view the post season in the near future. That number of boys put the team at the minimum to run as a varsity squad, while the girls all ran as individuals. This did not hamper the runners as all present continued to hold their own, either improving on or maintaining their times from last week. The Raiders recorded their first victory of the 2012 season in Friday night’s homecoming win over the Manson Trojans, 45-27. With the win, the Raiders are tied with White Swan for fourth in the Central Washington 2B League with a one-win, one-loss league record. Manson did not roll over for the Raiders. The Lady Raiders fell 3-2 to Manson last Thursday in a hard-fought match on the Trojans’ home court. In the first game, the Lady Raiders struggled and lost to the Trojans by six points. But in the second and third games, Lake Roosevelt came alive and put together two close wins, including an extra-time win in the third game. The Lady Raiders came away with a victory Saturday at home against the Waterville Shockers, 3-2. Raider runners Kendall Piccolo and Alexia Hanway led the Raiders at the Erik Anderson/Runner’s Soul Invitational last Saturday. Piccolo finished with a time of 20 minutes, 23.04 seconds for the top spot on the Raider boys’ squad. Hanway led the the Raider girls with the time of 25:10.3. LR is on a win streak as the Raiders defeated the Mustangs in a non-league game last Friday by the score of 28-25. Raider cross country ran into the toughest test of the early season last Saturday at the Runners Soul Invite in the Spokane Valley. Over 40 schools from Eastern Washington and North Idaho ran in the race. Lady Raider volleyball fought hard through fatigue and tough opponents last week as they played 19 games in three days. Head Coach Nate Piturachsatit was proud of the way the girls kept playing, "Even though they were tired they didn't let it show on the court." The Lady Raiders dropped two volleyball matches to tough state contenders last week. In Tuesday’s match against the Pateros Nannies, the Lady Raiders came in strong and took the first match 25-20. Lake Roosevelt did not score until the second half, with the Indians building a 33-0 lead going into halftime. “We played poorly in the first half and dug ourselves a big hole,” Raider Head Coach Steve Files said. LR football was handed its second loss of the season Saturday as the Seattle Lutheran Saints won the seesaw fight 19-6. The Raiders moved the ball on the Saints, but tough breaks with turnovers prevented LR from scoring more points. The Raiders were stymied by The Davenport Gorillas’ rushing attack and stiff defense stymied the Lake Roosevelt Raiders last Friday as Davenport cruised to a 44-13 home victory. It was the Raiders’ season opener as LR had pulled out of the Aug. 27 Bridgeport Jamboree because of eligibility issues. It is very discouraging to consistently read of the editorial position of this paper and the local school district’s position of calling on the federal government for funds to build the local school. The district already has $25 million from the state to build a K-12 educational wing and to demolish the grade school. The district also has $5.5 million to build a new gym complex. Lake Roosevelt football began pre-season workouts this month with new Head Coach Steve Files introducing changes he brings to Raider football. Files was an assistant last year at LR and has coached football since 1984 at his alma mater 4A Newport (Bellevue), Lake Washington, and Bothell High Schools. Joining Files as assistants are Joe Tynan and Brandon White. Both were assistants last year.
