The Lake Roosevelt Raider wrestlers headed south to Coulee City last Wednesday for the Banks Lake Brawl, where each of the seven Raiders placed. Kaleb Horn, Jon Shelley, Tony Nichols, and Ida Sue all received first-place spots. Ryan Moon and Steven Flowers each took second place in their weight categories, and Gabe Moses took third. After a bye-round, Horn won first place in the 120-pound division by defeating two Hanford boys. Horn won by technical fall, 16-1, against Dax Cummings, then beat Breaden Nalle 9-2. The Lake Roosevelt Raiders alumni vs. alumni basketball game was a big success, with good turnout and close games, according to Miranda Salas, who helped organize the event. Two games were played, one between the guys and one between the girls. In the men’s game, the white team defeated the crimson team by less than 10 (official scores unavailable), and in the women’s game the crimson team won by four points. The Lady Raiders beat the Manson Trojans Dec. 13 before defeating the undefeated Tonasket Lady Tigers on Thursday to go 4-2 for the season before losing a non-league game at Okanogan. Lake Roosevelt defeated the Trojans on their home court 40-30. LR Head Coach Wallace Pleasants attributed the win to "limiting turnovers and staying focused on the defensive end." The Raider boys' basketball team is struggling to win more games this season, losing last week to both Manson and Tonasket, giving them a 1-6 win-loss record for the season after losing a non-league game against Okanogan. The Raiders lost to the Manson Trojans 58-31 on the road last Tuesday. Lake Roosevelt Raider wrestlers participated in the Oroville Mix & Match as well as the Cashmere Invite this past week. Four Raider wrestlers travelled to Oroville for the mix & match last Wednesday, wrestling eight matches total, winning four and losing four. Raider Kaleb Horn dominated his two match-ups, winning by technical falls, or a large point margin, 18-1 against Oroville’s Michael Lewis, and 17-1 against Tonasket’s Israel Gomez, both in just the second round. The Lady Raiders showed no mercy Saturday to Soap Lake, winning by 27 points following two losses of their own against Brewster and Liberty Bell last week. Following a 60-44 loss to the Lady Bears last Tuesday, the Lady Raiders lost to the Lady Mountain Lions by only three points on Thursday, with a final score of 54-51. The Raider boys chalked up their first mark in the win column for the season after defeating the Liberty Bell Mountain Lions 52-43 Thursday. "It's hard to go out to Liberty Bell and play well, and we did that," remarked Head Coach Levi Seekins. Raider wrestlers hosted the Lake Roosevelt Mix and Match Dec. 7, before going to the Connell Tournament on Saturday. The LR Mix and Match, unlike tournaments, doesn't involve eliminations, brackets, placings, or team points, but is rather just a fun way for wrestlers to get together and wrestle. Lake Roosevelt High School will be holding alumni vs. alumni basketball games on Wednesday, Dec. 21. Lake Roosevelt is looking for LR graduates of any age to participate in the event. Even out-manned four to one, Raider wrestlers placed third out of 13 schools Saturday at the 26th Annual Davenport Invitational with a team total of 76 points. The Raiders boys basketball team suffered a grim defeat in Oroville over the weekend, losing 80-30 to the Hornets in Oroville. “It was really a tough game to start the season,” remarked Head Coach Levi Seekins. “We played hard throughout the whole game. The Lady Raiders basketball team defeated the Oroville Lady Hornets on the Hornets’ home court 64-46 Saturday in the 2016-17 season opener. “We got out to an outstanding start with our defense, which allowed us to get into some of the things we have been working on,” said Head Coach Wallace Pleasants. Grand Coulee Dam area residents may soon have a second option for where they pick up their prescription drugs. Coulee Medical Center expects to have a new retail pharmacy up and running by early 2017, according to Jonathan Owens, chief executive officer. “We have had multiple request from the community for a new pharmacy and our board felt this was a service that was something that they also supported,” Owens said. Coulee Medical Center has “every intention” of building a daycare center for their employees, according to Chief Executive Officer Jonathan Owens. Completion of the project is anticipated for May or June 2017, at the latest, Owens told his board of commissioners Monday night. Owens said $10,000 to $15,000 has already gone into remodeling the old clinic’s basement for the purpose, but because of updates from city and state regulators, building a separate daycare would be “much more cost effective.” Owens described a potential new building... Students at Nespelem Elementary received a hands-on science experience from chemical engineers from Washington State University last week. Doctor Seu Ha, an immigrant from Korea, received his Bachelor of Science in chemical engineering from North Carolina University and his doctorate from the University of Illinois before finding himself as a professor at WSU. Nespelem Elementary opened up a new playground on Tuesday when student Feather Fry cut the ceremonial ribbon and the children rushed to play with the colorful new equipment. The playground, which includes equipment to climb on, spin on, swing on, slide down, and more, was built using $126,000 from the Healthy Use Fitness Grant, a state grant from the Office of Superintendent of Public Instruction in Olympia. The Lake Roosevelt Raiders fell in the first round of the state playoffs to the Northwest Christian Crusaders 48-16 at Joe Albi Stadium in Spokane Friday night. The Central Washington B football league nominated their “All-League” players last week, with 14 Lake Roosevelt Raiders making the cut, including eight first-team selections, five second-team selections, and one honorable mention. The coaches in the league nominate players and vote, but can’t vote for the players on their own team. The Lake Roosevelt Raiders defeated the DeSales Irish in an incredible comeback victory Friday to move on to the first round of state playoffs. The victory in Coulee Dam marks the first time the Raiders have gone on to state since 2001. The now 7-2 Raiders will face the 9-1 Northwest Christian Crusaders this Friday in Spokane.
