  • Martial arts matches mix it up

    Scott Hunter|Apr 4, 2012

Locals prevailed in mixed martial arts matches held at the Nespelem Community Center Saturday night in an event billed as “Rez Cage Wars”. The event featured six adult MMA matches and one youth grappling (no boxing) match. The night’s headliner provided suspense as Nespelem’s Ricky Gabriel, a Colville Business Council member, took the title against Kevin James by decision 29-28 in three rounds. Gabriel said after the fight that he, along with Community Center Coordinator Dan Nanamkin, started... Full story

  • Baseball drops makeup game

    John McNeil II|Apr 4, 2012

Lake Roosevelt baseball was washed out with last week’s rain, but was back in action on Monday for the first makeup game of the series against Brewster. The Raiders will travel to Brewster on Tuesday for a double header that was cancelled on Saturday. The game on Monday at Greene Field was the first loss for the Raiders in the 2012 season. Brewster used aggressive base running to disrupt Raider pitching rhythm, the Bears were also helped by the errors LR committed on defense. Offensively the R... Full story

  • Raider track still shifting

    John McNeil II|Apr 4, 2012

Raider track is still shifting people around to find the best competitive mix. At Cashmere last Friday, for instance, speedster Nick Gleason threw shot put and distance man Oscar Pakootas tried his hand at the 100-meter dash. Even with the mix-and-match approach, many Raiders hit personal records, with both teams placing. The boys took fifth, while the girls finished 4th. Kim Barry continued as a force for the Lady Raiders, winning the 800 in two minutes, 35 seconds, the 1600 (5:54), and the... Full story

  • Stanczak, Desautel on top

    John McNeil II|Apr 4, 2012

Tanecia Stanczak and Drew Desautel led the way for the Raiders at Desert Canyon Golf Club in last Wednesday’s match against Waterville, Columbia Basin Secondary, Moses Lake Christian, and Omak. Stanczak, for the second week, outclassed her opponets to breeze to a 51-stroke score on nine holes. Head Coach Steve Files thought Stanczak’s performance was “stellar” on the greens, which helped to distance her from the rest of the competition. Desautel lead the Raider boys with a score of 55 on the... Full story

  • Raiders rackets rained out

    John McNeil II|Apr 4, 2012

With the wet weather, the Raider tennis squad was only able to play one of three matches scheduled for last week, and that match was a makeup for a previous weather cancellation. At Omak March 26, the Pioneers roughed up the Raiders on the whole. The only win for the Raiders came in boys’ singles action as Hayden Rodrigues defeated Cody Smith in convincing form, 8-1. Phoenix Shephard came back from a deficit to force a tie breaker, but lost to Greg Sklar 9-8, (7-0). Kayne Oberg dropped his m... Full story

  • Raider softball loses to Brewster, rained out

    John McNeil II|Apr 4, 2012

The Lady Raiders series against Brewster last week had the misfortune to be rained out not only at home on Tuesday, but also on Saturday at Brewster for the doubleheader. For Lady Raider softball, that means this week will feature home games on Monday and Tuesday against Brewster and Waterville respectively, but also a second doubleheader on either Thursday or Friday at Brewster to go along with the regularly scheduled one on Saturday at Waterville. When the Lady Raiders returned to action on Mo... Full story

  • Balanced tale told in new TV production on Grand Coulee Dam

    Scott Hunter|Mar 28, 2012
    1

The promotional material hinted at a possible bias in the way the tale might unfurl. Had the documentary film makers at WGBH Boston’s “American Experience” history series built into their telling of the story of “Grand Coulee Dam” a kind of modern hindsight sensationalism? A super-green perspective that sees no good in the harnessing of the great Columbia? Passages like “… this film explores how the tension between technological achievement and environmental impact hangs over the project's legacy” led me to wonder. After 90 minutes of watc... Full story

  • Newspaper won’t change, but online approach will

    Scott Hunter|Mar 28, 2012

With the decision this year to revamp The Star Online, and starting to charge for full access to it, readers will soon find added benefits in subscribing and that the online version will supplement the printed one. The decision will mean that updates in between issues won’t be stealing any thunder from the printed newspaper, just preluding it, so there is added incentive to get news online faster. In addition, readers will find a few new features to the site we launched in February, which at present does not require a subscription, but will s... Full story

  • How about a buzzer?

    Carol Schoning|Mar 28, 2012

Having had two evening visits to our nice, up-to-date hospital emergency room, the first time I went there was no one to be seen, so I pulled the door open. Now when the front door is locked for the night, there is a sign saying, please KNOCK, do not pull door open. REALLY? Wouldn't you think that they could at least have a buzzer, like the old hospital? Carol Schoning... Full story

  • McKenna, Republicans espouse lopsided economics

    Paul Schlossman|Mar 28, 2012

As the campaign for governor advances, the essential contours of the debate in Washington are visible for study by all voters: A governor’s leadership in education in any state is comparable to the defense function nationally/federally. On this, who would believe that McKenna, who in concert with other Republican officials openly considers ways to reduce education funding, can carry on the education function? The economy of Washington includes the private sector and the essential role of the governmental finance function. The essential p... Full story

  • Raiders take down Okanogan

    John McNeil II|Mar 28, 2012

Raider baseball swept Okanogan at Greene Field on Saturday by scores of 9 to 6 in both games of the doubleheader. Head Coach Brandon Byers likes the performance of his squad this early in the season, "These were the types of games that we really wanted our boys to be in before we start league play,” Head Coach Brandon Byers said. “We had several mental and physical errors in the middle part of both games that were uncharacteristic of the team, but the guys did a great job of bouncing back immedi... Full story

    John McNeil II|Mar 28, 2012

Raider tennis players won matches last week with the boys winning all three and the girls slowly improving as the week progressed. At White Swan March 20, the boys won the match 3-2, with Phoenix Shepard, Hayden Rodrigues, and Nick Rice sweeping the singles matches in favor of the Raiders. Shepard dispatched Xavier Valladares, 6-3 and 6-0. Rodrigues trounced Armondo Cervantes of White Swan 6-1, 6-3. John McNeil II|Mar 28, 2012

Junior Tanecia Stanczak and Freshmen Austin Rosenbaum both medalled at Lake Chelan Golf Course last Thursday in the opening match of the season for the Raiders. The Raider boys’ team competed against Manson, Waterville, and Entiat, while Stanczak competed against the other girls as an individual as there were not enough girls to form a squad for any of the schools present. Stanczak shot a 53 on the nine-hole course to take home the gold medal. Head Coach Steve Files was pleased with her p... Full story

  • Softball opens with Okanogan

    John McNeil II|Mar 28, 2012

After the confusion of having their head coach quit and the original opener with Cashmere postponed, the Lady Raiders opened at home under interim Head Coach Kevin Rosenbaum against the always-tough Okanogan Bulldogs, losing 30-4 Thursday at home. Junior Danielle Laramie took to the mound for what Coach Rosenbaum believes was her first-ever game pitching. In the first inning, the Bulldogs sensed that and ran out ahead, taking advantage of every mistake the Lady Raiders made. It looked to turn... Full story

  • Tribal members hear terms of settlement

    Scott Hunter|Mar 21, 2012
    2

The only thing certain about how a $193 million settlement with the U.S. government will be used is that 20 percent of it will be paid out to members of the Confederated Tribes of the Colville Reservation. Exactly how and when the $38.6 million in annual “per capitas” will be distributed from a trust account is also undecided. But an initial payment will likely come in August, notes an information sheet distributed at district meeting in Nespelem Monday night. News media independent of the tribes were excluded from the meeting, but Col... Full story

  • Club plans for bigger, better shred day

    James Heuvel, Rotary Club member|Mar 21, 2012

Grand Coulee Dam Rotary Club is planning to tear up even more stuff than it did last year in an upcoming free community shred day. The club's first free community shred day last year had been scheduled to run from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m, but community response was so great that by 11, the United Data Securities 10,000-pound capacity shred truck was filled to the point its massive steel doors were bulging. Shredding was shut down after only two hours and Rotary Club members had to turn many away. Wes, from Spokane's United Data Security, said that he... Full story

  • New DUI law stiffens penalties, opens records

Raechel Dawson, WNPA Olympia News Bureau|Mar 21, 2012

After a Friday night of happy-hour and late-night drinking, many fail to consider the repercussions of driving while impaired, but legislators have. Various changes to the driving-under-the-influence law have unanimously passed the Legislature and after the governor signs it, takes effect Aug. 1. The reform puts more stringent penalties on those convicted of drunk driving, including increased fees and facial recognition systems on ignition-interlock devices. Rep. Roger Goodman, D-Kirkland, sponsored House Bill 2443, which, he said, will... Full story

  • God gives us the right to choose

    Angel Clark Hall|Mar 21, 2012

There is nothing I want more than for everyone to be saved. I lie awake wondering how God will save us, and I always come back to the same answer again and again. God will save us through his love, which he revealed to us in his son Jesus Christ. Too often people judge God through the actions or words of the religious, but religions have a tendency to create their own version of God. Fortunately, the authentic God is better than anything we could ever come up with. I am confident that if you really want to know who God is, just look to the Son... Full story

  • It’s Not Just Congress: Citizens also have room to improve

    Lee Hamilton|Mar 21, 2012

As a member of Congress, you get used to being graded. Interest groups send you questionnaires, check your voting record, and then issue their “report cards.” Editorial writers opine freely on your performance. Pollsters issue monthly updates on how Congress is faring with the public. Members of Congress learn to expect this judgment and criticism. It’s part of being an elected official in this country — and should be. But they also learn that Congress is part of a larger political system that also involves We The People. Our democracy doesn’t... Full story

    John McNeil II|Mar 21, 2012

LR out-hit Tonasket 23-1 en route to a doubleheader victory over the visiting Tigers last Saturday at Greene Field. In the first game, every Raider who came to bat not only got on base, but also scored a run. "At the plate our hitters did a good job of being patient and not trying to do too much with the pitches,” Raider Head Coach Brandon Byers said of the slugfest. “They showed good bat control and put the ball in play." Kramer Carlson hit a double and a home run in the first game to con... Full story

  • Raider softball coach resigns

    Scott Hunter|Mar 21, 2012

Lake Roosevelt High School’s head softball coach resigned Monday, leaving the team’s first game of the season, scheduled for Thursday, uncertain. Athletic Director Rich Black said the resignation came as a surprise to him, and noted that, from his perspective, there had been no reason for coach Flint Bjorson to step down. “Flint has some personal concerns that convinced him that he could no longer perform in the capacity of head softball coach,” Black said. Bjorson could not be reached for comment by deadline. “Going forward, we are attemptin... Full story

  • Tennis has soggy opening

    John McNeil II|Mar 21, 2012

The rain caused an early end to the opening matches of the season against Tonasket at the LR tennis courts last Saturday, ending the one good match the Raiders had for the day. “Our one bright spot was Brandin Smith, who did not get to finish his match because of rain,” Head Coach Steve Archer commented. “Hopefully we will fare better against the other schools in our league.” Smith won the first set in his singles match against Colton Leep 6-3. When the second match ended due to the rain, t... Full story

The West Valley Invite featured most of the 4A/3A Greater Spokane League, half of the 2A Great Northern League, three from the Northeast “A” League, with Colfax of the Bi-County being the only other 2B school. The Raiders where allowed to enter every trackster in all of their events to get quality meet time. “The meet allowed unlimited entries per ev... Full story
