One player was placed on the disabled list and a few others had been... Full story

Raider tennis cancelled their match on Thursday after the sudden death of schoolmate Rickey Louie-Burris. The match will be made up at a later date. “Some of our tennis kids were very close to Rickey and were unable to compete," Head Coach Steve Archer said. Raider tennis had to move on, though, and first on the list as they hit the courts the next day against Pateros/Brewster was to win and continue to improve. • Lady Raiders skunked by the Nannies

    John McNeil II|Apr 25, 2012

The Lady Raiders, coming off their three game sweep of the Fillies, got swept themselves by the Nannies of Pateros last week. The team was hit hard by the sudden loss of Rickey Louie-Burris, Head Coach Tristan Daniels commented. "It has been hard for a lot of the softball players to handle,” he said. “Some have never had a friend or classmate pass away. We think, what if we were there? It may not have happened.” In the first game of the series, the Lady Raiders could not get anything going... Full story

    John R McNeil II|Apr 25, 2012

Last week at the Grand Coulee Dam Middle School’s GCD Home Meet, eighth-grader Sydney Matheson threw for a 4-foot personal record in the shot put, which placed her at number one in the state for middle school girls. Matheson’s throw of 36 feet, 9 inches edged out Angel Nkwonta from Lincoln Middle School in Pullman by just one inch for first place in the athletic.net Washington State performance list at 6 pounds. Matheson was ecstatic just hear how far her throw had gone, let alone that she was the best in the state. Tomorrow at Bridgeport, Mat... Full story

  • USBR finds no significant impact

    Scott Hunter|Apr 18, 2012

A project to improve the pump-generator plant at Grand Coulee Dam will have no significant impact on the environment — or on the local school district, the U.S. Bureau of Reclamation states in a formal paper. The Bureau released its Finding of No Significant Impact and Final Environmental Assessment for the proposed John W. Keys, III Pump Generating Plant Modernization Project on April 12. The Grand Coulee Dam School District had objected to not being notified and asked for input on the project, contending it could significantly impact d... Full story

  • All choked up

    Scott Hunter|Apr 18, 2012

Our community is all abuzz with the news that a new school is funded. People from all walks — young parents, elderly without kids, business people, kids in schools, teachers, laborers of all sorts — get an excited gleam in the eye, and even a few tears welling in the eyes sometimes when they bring up the news. And we should be excited. The state’s decision, spearheaded by your 12th Legislative District Senator Linda Evans Parlette, may even be unprece-dented. The state normally offers a match to communities that can raise enough through prope... Full story

  • An update on school bullying

    Sharey Redthunder|Apr 18, 2012

I would like to give an update on my reports of BULLYING occurring in GCDSD schools and my lack of support from school administration to address the ongoing problem or even return my numerous calls and emails. I met with Dennis Carlson, superintendent, on Tuesday, March 13, with my concerns about the safety and wellbeing of my son (and others) and lack of response to my concerns by Lisa Lakin, principal of the middle school. Dr. Carlson was receptive to hearing my needs and stated he would follow up on my issues. Dr. Carlson called me on... Full story

  • New school complex funded in state capital budget

    Roger Lucas and Scott Hunter|Apr 11, 2012
    1

Sometimes dreams do come true. The Grand Coulee Dam School District’s plans for a new school appear to be a go. After long budgeting hassles in Olympia, the governor, the House and Senate finally agreed today, mostly, on a budget — one that includes enough money to build a new school for the Grand Coulee Dam community. Added to the $14 million already approved two years ago for the project, a $17 million line item in the supplemental capital budget appeared virtually assured of passage early thi... Full story

  • No need for litigation?

    Scott Hunter|Apr 11, 2012
    1

As the city of Grand Coulee gets pressured to enforce its cleanup laws, it might consider changing them, if necessary. If city officials are worried about the cost of litigation in forcing residents to clean up their own property, they should at least consider a legal route other towns have taken: put the ordinance in the criminal, rather than civil, code. Doing so no doubt comes with pros and cons on which the city’s attorney can offer advice, but the general thrust of the reasoning for it is that infractions are dealt with in a simpler m... Full story

  • Reflections - Opportunity knocks for teachers — overseas

Jean Nicholson member of Them Dam Writers|Apr 11, 2012

The opportunities for young graduates from college are immense. I recently had one of my grandchildren sign up to be a teacher in South Korea. He graduated from college but could find no teaching jobs at the time except helping at the local schools in various jobs. He was not happy and while playing on the computer one day he found that teachers were needed in international areas to teach their children the English language. He applied and was accepted in South Korea. He loves the job and the area and has worked there for two years. He also... Full story

  • Hard week of improvement for Ladies

    John McNeil II|Apr 11, 2012

Tristen Daniels was introduced Monday as the new head coach for Lake Roosevelt softball after a hard week of improvement and growth. The week started with a home game April 2 against Brewster when the Lady Raiders lost 30-4. Because of spring break several of the girls had left with their families, leaving the interim coaches with holes to fill for Thursday's doubleheader against Brewster. The Lady Raiders continued to struggle and suffered two more hard losses at the hands of the Bears.... Full story

  • Raiders take two from Bears

    John McNeil II|Apr 11, 2012

In a make-up doubleheader at Brewster last Thursday, the Raider bats came alive to take both games from the Bears. It was a turn around from last Monday’s 8-2 loss to the same team. In the first game, Brady Black stayed on the mound for six innings, racking up three strikeouts and holding the Bears to two hits, allowing only one earned run. Justus DeWinkler finished out the game, closing it with three strikeouts, knocking down the Bears in order. “Defensively, our pitchers continued pounding the strike zone,” noted Head Coach Brandon Byers... Full story

  • Hospital commissioner steps down from board

    Scott Hunter|Apr 4, 2012

Rick King stepped down from his longtime post as hospital district commissioner Wednesday, ending a 14-year volunteer career capped by the building of a new hospital. “This has been one of the hardest things to decide,” King said, announcing his resignation at the regular monthly meeting of the Douglas, Grant, Lincoln, Okanogan Hospital District 6 board of commissioners. “It’s been one of the funnest things I’ve done, being on this board. And it’s been one of the worst things I’ve done,” he sai... Full story

  • Retreat from what, exactly?

    Scott Hunter|Apr 4, 2012
    1

The concept is fairly mundane, nothing to get excited about. Executive and leadership boards quite often go on “retreats” to places other than their usual haunts to hash out ideas and plans in a fresh setting, supposedly to add a creative boost to stale neural patterns, a fresh perspective from a different place. But when publicly elected officials decide to move their public meeting to a venue far away from their constituents, the retreat concept can take on a different twist altogether. Electric City’s City Council is planning one in Moses... Full story

  • RE: Neighborhood needs to be cleaned up

    Christie Arbauch|Apr 4, 2012

I would expand that statement. Our entire city needs to be cleaned up. Drive or walk about anywhere … our town is an eyesore. Besides the unlicensed cars, boats, trailers and motor homes on our streets, we also have burned and boarded up houses and yards filled with trash. The house next to ours was abandoned last year. Along with the trash in the yard, two cars were left behind. When approached, the police said we had to file a formal complaint with City Hall before they could do anything. If our city does not have an ordinance to keep our s... Full story

  • Time to speak up about crime

    Chuck Allen|Apr 4, 2012

Crime is the number one problem affecting the quality of life in Grant County. We are seeing an epidemic of thefts, as metal and hay thieves prey on our hardworking farmers. We’re seeing property crimes, including burglaries, vandalism and graffiti. We’re seeing the growing issue of gangs and the violence they bring. We’re seeing assaults, rapes and homicides. And there is a growing feeling by county residents that we are powerless to prevent crime. We are not powerless. The good people of Grant County can do something to help fight crime... Full story
