  • Tribal retrocession law awaits governor’s approval

Raechel Dawson, WNPA Olympia News Bureau|Mar 14, 2012

Washington’s tribal communities earned autonomous recognition from the state Legislature on the final day of the session March 8 that, upon the governor’s approval, could become effective as early as June. The bill that passed last week could cede back to tribes jurisdiction over civil and criminal matters involving tribal members in all areas, but control over sexually violent predators, so long as the governor and federal government officials agree on the requested “retrocession,” remain with the state. The three-step procedure tribal... Full story

  • School board comment was unfair, hurtful

    April Smith|Mar 14, 2012

I want to write a response to the comment by an unnamed school board member in the article about ACH track and tennis coming to our school for practices. In the bottom of that article, it was mentioned that there was concern about not having enough players for softball and bringing up eighth-graders in order to have enough players. This is something that is allowed now that we are in the 2B class and many other schools do this so that their high school programs can continue to exist and compete. I think that it was very inappropriate and rude... Full story

  • Growing baseball squad features nine returners

    John McNeil II|Mar 13, 2012

Raider baseball enters the 2012 season returning nine players from last year’s 14-5 squad and hopes to have more of the same success this season. Those returners include 2011 Central Washington North League Catcher of the Year Kramer Carlson and the All-Central Washington North first team player Brady Black. Keith Rosenbaum, Tyler Garvin, and Justus DeWinkler also were acknowledged in 2011 for their play with Second Team All-Central Washington North selections. Seniors Dalton Boutain and Lee W... Full story

  • Raider golf still on for the 2012 season

    John McNeil II|Mar 13, 2012

With the recent closure of the Banks Lake golf club, many members of the community questioned whether Lake Roosevelt High School would have a golf team this spring. Luckily, Head Coach Steve Files was able to work a deal for the Raider golf team will still have access to the golf course for this season. “Of course, we are facing some uncertainty with regards to the status of Banks Lake Golf Course, but are pressing forward with our preparations for a great season of Raider Golf,” Files sai... Full story

  • Raider Track returns with experience, leadership

    John McNeil II|Mar 13, 2012

Fourteen returners, including three participants of the 2011 state track-and-field tournament, bring optimism to Raider Track for the 2012 season. Once again there will be no home meets for the Raider track team. This slight is easily forgotten when compared to the exposure to college recruiters that LR athletes will receive in Spokane-, Yakima- and Wenatchee-area meets. Head Coach Lori Adkins likes what she sees thus far. “The Raiders are giving the extra degree of effort to improve their t... Full story

    John McNeil II|Mar 13, 2012

Raider Tennis enters the 2012 season with 20 participants, including one from Almira-Coulee-Hartline and 14 returners from the 2011 squad. This season’s team is senior heavy with eight turning out, five of whom have played all four years. The rest of the squad is made up of four juniors, five sophomores, and two freshmen. With only six newcomers, tennis has one of the more exprienced squads among the spring sports at Lake Roosevelt High School. Head Coach Steve Archer is impressed with the o... Full story

  • Softball team building for the future

    John McNeil II|Mar 13, 2012

Lady Raider Softball enters the 2012 season with only four returners from last year’s 11-11 squad that put together a winning streak to close out the season. Seniors Jada Desautel, Ciara Nault, and Raelynne Dennis along with junior Danielle Laramie return to the squad this year. A noteworthy absense from the returners is Senior Briana Monaghan, who was a 2011 First Team All Central Washington North selection. Head Coach Flint Bjorson expects these four to be the leaders for the young squad. T... Full story

  • Musing on Morgan

    Scott Hunter|Mar 7, 2012

For the last quarter century or so, Reg Morgan has managed to turn out a column in The Star just about every week. That’s a lot of “musings” to scratch out into a collection of observations that folks want to read as part of their weekly routine. Morgan’s Musings has morphed over the years from a column primarily about hunting and fishing in the region to just about anything that fired up the neurons of its author, from flag protocol to federal finances to the ambulations of his cat. This week, Reg decided to give the keyboard a rest, more or... Full story

  • Raiders two and out at state

    John McNeil II|Mar 7, 2012

The Raiders dropped two state tournament games in Spokane last week to end a two-month winning streak and leave the tournament without a trophy for the fourth time in five years. In the opening game against Northwest Christian Thursday night, Keith Rosenbaum opened the scoring with a steal for a layin early and went on to score eight of the 12 Raider points in the first quarter. The Crusaders answered with 18 points and effectively shut down Ty Egbert as an offensive threat with a double team.... Full story

  • The new North Central B League

    John McNeil II|Mar 7, 2012

The North Central B League has been revived with the combination of the 2B and 1B schools in District 6 for the basketball and volleyball seasons. The 2B members of the new NCL include Oroville, Liberty Bell, Bridgeport, Manson, and Lake Roosevelt. The 1B members will be Pateros, Entiat, Waterville, Mansfield, and Cascade Christian of Wenatchee. This combination is a common occurrence in the Puget Sound, where the few B and 1A schools have to get together to avoid four- or five-hour league... Full story

  • Our take on the headlines

    Scott Hunter|Feb 29, 2012

The Colville Tribes’ settlement with the federal government over mismanagment of tribal assets held in trust is a good thing for the tribes and for this area. With a little over 9,000 members, the Colville membership and their leaders can do some very positive things with $193 million, including a substantial injection into the regional economy through buildup of their own resources and industry, payments to members or a combination. The hiring of a “records manager” in Coulee Dam may be prudent, if costly. The best outcome would occur if th... Full story

    Marriah Thornock|Feb 29, 2012

March is Red Cross Month in recognition of the work done by the American Red Cross in communities across the country and around the globe – and of how we depend on public support to help people in need. Thanks to support from individuals, organizations and businesses here in North Central Washington, the American Red Cross is able to respond to disasters both large and small; help members of the military, veterans and their families; provide blood for those in need and teach lifesaving skills. We want to thank those whose generosity enables u... Full story

  • Community Newspapers: “the heartbeat of American journalism”

    Bradley J Furnish|Feb 29, 2012

Localism is trending today in the realms of food and finance. The institution of the local community newspaper is also popular, but it wasn’t blogged into being - it was born long before videos started going viral. Major metropolitan newspapers may be a slowly dying breed, but community newspapers prove that American journalism is alive, well and living in the rural areas, small towns and suburbs of our land. The word “newspaper” may conjure mental images of a big pressroom, delivery trucks and eight-column banner headlines, but 97 percent of U... Full story

  • On to State

    John McNeil II|Feb 29, 2012

The Raiders head to the Spokane Arena on Thursday after defeating Waitsburg/Prescott in the regional matchup at Walla Walla High School last Friday, 70-53. Ty Egbert continues to show why he is being considered for the McDonald’s All-American team with 36 points and 19 rebounds against the Cardinals. The Raiders came into the game riding high on a winning streak stretching back to Jan. 3 and were looking to extend it one more and make the State 2B tourney for the second straight year. • Shifting populations will change regional sports

    John McNeil II|Feb 29, 2012

Changing school populations will realign sports league dynamics, affecting locals athletes and fans. For Lake Roosevelt sports, the changes — from the number of 2B schools in the state to the leagues that they compete in — will be changing and fluctuating into the summer. On Jan. 23, the Washington Interscholastic Activities Association finalized the classification numbers for the 2012-2014 cycle. LR itself is still shrinking. Over the last two years the number of students in grades 10-12 dro... Full story

  • Good suggestion still misses the point

    Scott Hunter|Feb 22, 2012

The mayor of Coulee Dam would like help from other towns putting on the annual July 4 festivities. He should get it, and be willing to take the concept several steps further. Mayor Quincy Snow notes the expense of putting on the entertainment. On the cheap, it’s around $15,000 by the time you add up band expenses, staging and lighting and sound technicians. He’s right to think the town shouldn’t put all of it on without help. He’s not quite right in thinking that it does. Coulee Dam has not been alone in funding the annual event. The overloo... Full story

  • Orrin Gross is state wrestling champion

    John McNeil II|Feb 22, 2012

Dominant all season, Raider wrestler Orrin Gross seized the state championship at 138 pounds at the Mat Classic in Tacoma last weekend to lead the team to sixth place in the state "B" championship tournament. In his first match, Gross pinned Oscar Roa of Brewster in the third round to move on to a semifinal match against Jon Walling of Kittitas. Walling continued to be a tough opponent for Gross, but Gross put the moves on Walling and defeated him 10-5. Gross took on Daniel Stauffer of... Full story

  • Lady Raiders End Season in Overtime

    John McNeil II|Feb 22, 2012

The Lady Raiders saw their season end last Friday at Eastmont High School in an overtime loss to Riverside Christian, 65-58. The Lady Raiders finished with a 15-8 overall win-loss record with several impressive wins and with a great deal of promise for the future. The team’s week started on a sour note with a loss to Entiat 58-49, that placed LR against the eight ball; any let-down or cold shooting streak could end the season right then and there. With that in mind, the girls faced Oroville o... Full story

  • Community center study is moving forward

    Scott Hunter|Feb 15, 2012

A grant-funded study will determine the feasibility of each aspect of a community/wellness center for the region following the award of a contract to Gary Leva, director of the Benewah Wellness Center in Plummer, Idaho and principal at the Gary Consulting Group in Spokane. Leva was instrumental in the formation of the community center serving the Plummer, Idaho area and several others. Last summer, a steering committee rekindled a three-year-old effort to establish a community/wellness center in the area. Self-named the Coulee Region Community... Full story

The commissioners agreed, voting to “look into it.” In other business, commissioners discussed a timeline for determing a contractor to maintain North Dam Park this summer.... Full story

    J Scott Graham|Feb 15, 2012

While we appreciate the coverage of our recent presentation to the Chamber of Commerce on the legislation that could adversely affect the financial well-being of our hospital, we feel it appropriate to respond to those in our community who have expressed concerns that closure of the hospital is imminent. Recently, House Bill 2130 was introduced into the legislature but no action has been taken to date. Therefore, we are in no immediate danger of the hospital closing. The point of our presentation was to ask for our community’s support in c... Full story
