Or rambling as The Star newspaper, Shut Up Mr Utz does. If AT&T buys Direct TV for the billions they are offering, hope they will offer services to all of North America. Will they again become the best, most secure stock market investment they once were? Will the stupid Feds allow them to be a regulated monopoly as they once were? Or will they become a thief as our local fuel stations have been allowed to become. I'm very hopeful that I will be able to shop at home again when the new service station opens in Grand Coulee. I have been told that... Full story
A special thanks to my hero, my granddaughter Kati Goodall, for knowing what to do and saving my life by giving me a shot when I passed out at the ball game. I’m not sure how you knew what to do, but you did. I would also like to thank all the people who helped me when I was down. I don’t know all your names, but there was Peggy Sandgren, Steve Harrington, Ben Alling and the ambulance crew to mention a few, and the staff at Coulee Medical Center were wonderful. I am here today because of Kati and all my friends and neighbors. I am blessed to... Full story

Three Lady Raider softball players have been named to the Central Washington 2B North All-League squads for the 2014 season. Raider Tennis competed in District 6 Tournament at Cashmere last week, where their season came to an end. The matches were close and were played to a different format than in the regular season. “The format was two out of three sets with no-add scoring, which means you only have to win games by one point,” noted Head Coach Steve Archer. “Many of the games for both Dan (Campobasso) and Holly (Carriere)/Areielle (White) went to deuce and were won by a single point.” Campobasso played Juan Mensoza of Cascade in boys’ singles. Mensoza took the... Full story
Raider golf came up short at the the District 5-6 Golf Tournament at Lake Chelan Golf Course May 20, so no Raider golfer will advance to the state tournament this season. Brandon Desautel and Mikel Friedlander finished sixth and seventh, respectively, which was just one place too low to advance. “Our kids were grinding out there, but we didn’t play our best,” Raider Head Coach Steve Files said. “I was proud of our effort and the way we competed.” Desautel shot a 116 for his sixth-place finish. He need to cut off six strokes to qualify f... Full story
In the wake of state inspections and allegations of harassment and retaliation, the mayor of Coulee Dam has ordered immediate changes in the town’s paid volunteer ambulance service, some of which have sparked threats of EMTs purposely not responding, he said. The state Department of Health inspected the ambulance May 8 at the invitation of Mayor Greg Wilder and found a dozen “areas of non-compliance” with state law and standards. Those were detailed in a letter to Fire Chief Robert Jackson dated May 14. Issues cited ranged from candy bars... Full story

In response to three letters published last week so fervently against the “Wild horse race” coming up this weekend, there needs to be some things cleared up. The term “Wild horse race” has misled the three concerned ladies that voiced their strong objection and outrage against this “most inhumane thing.” First of all, these are not “wild horses” as you would see on some National Geographic documentary. Usually these are horses that have demonstrated that they don’t have the temperament to be saddle horses. Most horses that have shown this t... Full story
I’d like to take this time to thank all the staff (surgeon and nurses) that personally took care of me before surgery, during surgery and after. I was and still am overwhelmed by the kindness, the caring and the concern I was given at CMC. I’ve lived in the coulee for 35 years and am proud to call it my home. I applaud every one of the medical people who cared for me during my short stay at CMC. With much, much appreciation, I sincerely thank the surgeon and nurses that stood by my side and made me feel of importance. Thank you! Thank you! Tha... Full story

Coulee Medical Center staff pulled together a recruitment booth for a medical conference in Spokane last month where Dr. Andrew Castrodale was a featured speaker. Chief Executive Officer Debbie Bigelow told hospital commissioners Monday night that staff members displayed beautiful photographs of the area and the hospital and wrote articles about “what a great place this is to live and work.” Recruiting physicians to rural areas is not easy, but CMC’s previous CEO was content to use traditional recruitment firms for the task. Castrodale has purs... Full story
In 1964, the average annual salary in the United States was $5,880. It cost 5 cents to mail a letter. You could buy a fine house for $20,000 and a brand new Ford Mustang cost a whopping $2,400. And when Merv Schmidt came to run a gas station in Coulee Dam, the price of gas in Spokane was 34.9 cents a gallon. Locally, it was 39.9 cents. That nickel difference seemed like a lot to Merv, but people bought the gas, even though it was 14 percent more than in Spokane. When I got here in 1988, there were six local gas stations. All of them were much... Full story
Lake Roosevelt’s baseball team finished the 2014 season Monday at Wenatchee Valley Juinor College in a loser-out game against White Swan. The Raiders kept it close but could not beat the Cougars in the end. The Cougars ended the Raiders season in 2013 in the same early morning loser out game. Earlier in the week, the Raiders lost to the league’s number-one Liberty Bell Mt. Lions in a slugfest. The Raiders could not stop the Mt. Lion offense that scored 17 runs. The loss placed LR in the second-place spot from the Central Washignton 2B Nor... Full story
Lady Raider softball dropped all three of their games last week. At Oroville May 6, the Lady Raiders lost to the Hornets by a close score. On the mound, Tristen Adolph continued her streak of solid performances, striking out eight batters and giving up only four walks. Some 68 percent of Adolph’s 124 pitches were strikes. Adolph along with Savannah Marin had a good day at the plate, going three for four. But Lake Roosevelt left six runners stranded on the base paths and made too many errors that allowed the Hornets to score. In a May 9 d... Full story

As you enjoy Colorama this week, be thankful for the place where much of it comes together — North Dam Park and Event Center — and think about the sand dunes that would replace it if ceases to exist, which it could. This community asset is just one of the potential casualties of irrational stinginess on the part of some city council members who think the only funds they currently spend on the park just shouldn’t be spent that way. A very large cache of those funds, from hotel/motel taxes that are supposed to support tourism, sit doing nothi... Full story
