A solid piece of local history got cleaned up and clarified last weekend so people can enjoy and use it more in the present as volunteers from across the state continued work on the Candy Point Trail in Coulee Dam. The trail has historical significance, having been built by the Civilian Conservation Corps back in 1937. Contacted by Coulee Dam's Parks and Natural Resources Board, last year the Washington Trails Association cleared brush along the 2.25-mile trail. It extends from behind Coulee... Full story

Over this past year “Jess, shut up!” has become the first thing I turn to after reading the front page. I just want him to know how much I appreciate his column, and warn him that if I ever see him in person, I will be giving him a BIG hug. He gives me hope that there are some good people out there. Barbara Peter...
I’ve licked my finger, held it up to the air; now I can tell you what winter will bring. If only it were that simple! So, let me share what is being stated by our federal agencies that work in the arena of weather prediction. First, let’s take a look at what is going on in the Tropical Pacific Ocean — down there where La Niña and El Niño are found. That area, down there in the Tropical Pacific Ocean, is called the ENSO — El Niño Southern Oscillation. What’s happening currently is that sea surface temperatures are dropping and there is a l...

The Lake Roosevelt Raiders competed at the Tonasket Invitational on Thurs., Sept 28. "It was a challenging meet," said Head Coach Brian Daniels. The coach said that, facing the grass-gravel-dirt surfaced, 2.8-mile course (shorter than the usual 3.1-mile course), his runners performed consistently with how they've been...

In Washington, the legislative stalemate over permitting new household wells and the state’s construction budget has not only delayed needed funding for public projects, but triggered yet another salvo in the wider conflict over future supplies of fresh water for people, fish and farms. At immediate risk is $4.2 billion in state funding for local water and sewer projects, school construction, mental-health facilities, colleges and universities, and other construction. While there is general agreement between Democrats controlling the House a...
