Electric City officials are looking at a portion of the Baptist Church School playground area for a city park. Councilmember Lonna Bussert has long sought a site for a city park and the site is in the hub of city activity, next to the fire station and close to city hall. Mayor Jerry Sands has been instructed by the council to contact Baptist Church School officials regarding purchase of the site. In the background is the fire station.

Electric City may be getting a park.

The mayor was instructed by the city council last week to contact the Baptist Church School officials in Electric City and develop an offer for the northern portion of the playground area.

The city has for a long time wanted a park.

Councilmember Lonna Bussert told the council Sept. 9 that the northern half of the church school playground might be available for purchase to establish a park.

She said the site is centrally located in the city and there would be plenty of parking. Roads border both sides of the area.

The proposed park site is sandwiched between School Avenue and McNett Avenue, and is next to the city's fire station and a couple of blocks from city hall.

The area proposed is 80 feet by 180 feet, but more space might be available for purchase.

"We need a park before we can get grants," Bussert told the council.

The mayor is instructed to contact church personnel and proceed with a plan to purchase the site.

Earlier the city had investigated a site along SR-155, but owners of the property wanted $60,000 for it and a park next to a highway didn't set too well with city officials.
