  • BBCC offers GED and HS21+ classes

    Students who need to brush up prior to taking the 2014 Series GED exams have that opportunity beginning next week. The class is available to students sixteen years old and older, although students between 16 and 19 years old must be officially released by the school district. Adults 21 years old and older have the option of combining Big Bend Basic Skills courses with a variety of prior experiences to earn a high school diploma.     Students in the local area have had opportunities to sharpen their skills in preparation for the GED exams, improve workplace skills, and prepare for college; and that’s still true. Now, however, adults who lack a high school diploma have a new way to get a second chance. It’s called “High School 21+,” a competency-based high school diploma offered at Washington’s community and technical colleges.     The public is in for some surprises when they tour the new school complex in Coulee Dam this Friday: - Polished concrete floors sparkle and give off a sense of expensive treatment.     In an avalanche of last-minute personnel changes, Nespelem Elementary School covered all its employee bases Monday, as new Principal Debra Pankey walked the school board through a configuration of new teachers and aides. Pankey, the school’s special education director, was hired this summer following the resignation of John Adkins as superintendent and principal.     A thank-you note from a firefighter fills a whiteboard in the foyer at Nespelem Elementary School, which offered refuge from scorching daytime heat to some 235 night-shift workers on the Devil's Elbow Complex Fire, who found it impossible to sleep in their tents. The school paid two of its employees overtime to clean up walls afterward, and an outside contractor re-cleaned every carpet for $13,000 after the firefighters left.     Nominations are being accepted, from Aug. 26 through Oct. 1, for current students in the Grand Coulee Dam School District’s highly capable program.     Lake Roosevelt High School students interested in gaining job skills for fishery biology will have an opportunity this summer through a six-week program grant from the Bonneville Power Administration.     Karah Duclos, of Coulee Dam, has been awarded an Edward and Vieno Nansen Scholarship of $2,252.20 for the 2014-15 academic year at Eastern Washington University, the school announced. The scholarship is awarded a student from the Grand Coulee/Electric City area. While at Lake Roosevelt High, she was a member of the National Honor Society, and played volleyball and softball.   • GCD School District signs with meal manager

    The Grand Coulee Dam School District approved a five-year contract Monday night with Chartwell Food Service of Wenatchee, but has its eye on doing the food program within the district sometime in the future. The five-year contract will allow the district to opt out after any given year with a 30-day advance notice. Chartwell has been providing food service management to the district for the past five years. The board appointed Susan Chaffee and Carla Marconi to do a study on the benefits, if any, of the district managing its own food service.... Full story

    Ashley Clark and Arin Wall of Grand Coulee were among ninety of the GED and HS21+ diploma recipients whose accomplishments were celebrated at Big Bend Community College's completion ceremony Wednesday evening, June 11, in Moses Lake.     Tyler Palmer, a fifth-grader at Grand Coulee Dam Middle School, won the SHARP Kids writing contest with his story about a time machine. Over the last eight weeks, students were asked to write a story on a topic picked for them. Entries were to follow the basics of creative writing — setting, character, problem and resolution — and judging included points for spelling, punctuation and creative thinking.
