    The Community Foundation of NCW has extended its scholarship deadline to March 1. Over 90 scholarships are available to students in the North Central Washington Region, each unique with its own set of criteria established by generous donors, the foundation said this week.   • Spending Frenzy designed to give students money management skills

    Financial Literacy is an important skill, but is not usually "fun" to learn about. Not so for 193 Lake Roosevelt High School students who took part in a "Spending Frenzy" last week, learning about money management and having fun while doing it. Spending Frenzy is an interactive, life-sized version of the board game called "Life." Students were given a check, which they took to the bank and cashed in for a return of $40,000 in play money.     COULEE DAM—The Grand Coulee Dam School District board will now begin its meetings at 5:30 p.m., its members voted Monday night. The board now meets in the Lake Roosevelt High School library. • The Grand Coulee Methodist Church women donated $100 to the school district to purchase snacks to be used in the school’s health rooms to aid diabetic students. The school board accepted the gift. • Student enrollment for district schools stood at 707 for the month of January.     CWU Dylan Tipps and Makenna Tipps, of Electric City, were named to the Central Washington University fall 2014 honor roll.     Big Bend Community College is offering classes to meet three education goals during winter quarter. Adult Basic Education (ABE) classes are for students desiring to brush up on basic skills prior to enrolling in college or for personal enrichment.     Nate Piturachsatit has moved from physical education coordinator to counselor at Lake Roosevelt Elementary School. The change was approved by the Grand Coulee Dam School District board for the remainder of the year. Principal Lisa Lakin said this week that Piturchsatit is also taking his internship as a principal and expects to complete it this next spring.     Officials at Lake Roosevelt Elementary are trying to figure out why one of the first-grade classrooms picks up a sewer smell off and on. It happens in Kim Campbell’s first-grade room, and on occasion drives her and her 18 students across the hall into another classroom. Plumbers and other tradesmen are working to find the problem, crawling around checking pipe joints. Theories abound. None have proved positive.     The Grand Coulee Dam School District board approved a number of hires, allowed a leave of absence, and approved the retirement of a veteran counselor at its meeting Monday night. The board met in the new school after providing a tour of the building for the North Central Washington Educational Service District board of directors and Superintendent Richard McBride and hosting the group for an evening dinner.     Wednesday night, science program students at Lake Roosevelt High School stood by exhibits offering to explain some complex subjects they've been learning lately, and those questioned by The Star seemed to know their stuff.
