    Students from Lake Roosevelt High School attended the Imagine Tomorrow three-state high school competition at Washington State University May 30-31. "The team did not win an award this year but had a wonderful presentation and display," said LR science teacher Ralph Rise, advisor to the after-school team that took part in the alternative-energy competition.     The Grand Coulee Dam Federal Employees Association is proud to announce the recipients of their 2014 scholarships. Applicants must be a relative of a two year paid up member of the association and have submitted an application and be accepted at a college or technical school.     Grand Coulee High School Alumni Association has awarded three scholarships in the amount of $500 each to graduating seniors from the Lake Roosevelt High School Class of 2014. Recipient Nicole Baker, daughter of Corey and Shelley Baker of Grand Coulee, plans to attend Spokane Falls Commnity College to earn an Associate of Arts transfer degree.     Madisyn Byam is the 2014 recipient of the $500 scholarship awarded by local Chapter DG of P.E.O. International. The scholarship application process includes a review of the applicants’ academic achievement, community service, extracurricular activities, and educational goals.     Kaitlyn Reidt, left, and Kim Iverson were honored Thursday at the North Central Educational Service District's Okanogan County Excellence Banquet with the Excellence in Education awards for Nespelem School. Iverson, a "do-it-all" classified employee, according to Principal John Adkins.   • Martin's service honored with quilt

    A quilt with 16 Owhi Lake T-shirts framed by all the colors of the rainbow was given to Gary Martin at his retirement luncheon April 30. The Owhi Lake T-shirt Quilt was a gift from the Nespelem School and was designed and quilted by Cindy St. Pierre. The Owhi Lake T-shirts spanned the years from 1993 through 2013. Martin, working for the Bureau of Indian Affairs forestry department for the last 36 years, spearheaded Owhi Lake Day as outdoor education for Nespelem School and other nearby... Full story

  • New roof planned for old gym

    Lake Roosevelt’s gym will survive the wrecker’s ball, and it may take on a new appearance. It all depends on what funds are left over after the Grand Coulee Dam School District completes its new K-12 facility, due to open Sept. 15. The school board Monday night agreed to put a red metal roof on the gym, matching the roof of the new school, and to try to match the siding that is now going up on the new school.     The Nespelem School District Board set the school’s calendar for the next school year and changed the date of their regular monthly meetings last Wednesday. School will start next fall on Wednesday, Sept. 3 and end June 16, 2015, a Tuesday. Board meetings were changed from the fourth Wednesday of the month to the first Monday. They start at 5:30 p.m. in the staff break room. In addition to other holidays and staff training days, students will get a Winter Break set from an early release on Friday, Dec. 19 until Jan. 5.   • BBCC's facility proposal tops state priority list

    A proposal to build a Professional/Technical Education Center (PTEC) at Big Bend Community College is ranked first on the 2015-17 priority list for new major projects among the state’s community colleges.   • Response rate high for school furniture bid

    The Grand Coulee Dam School District received 17 responses to its advertisement to bid on furniture for the new school, but only two of the companies gave a full response to the specifications, Superintendent Dennis Carlson told the board Monday night. Carlson said that the district is going over the bids now and will make a recommendation to the board sometime in April.   • Kindergarten registration to begin for 2014-2015 school year

    Registration for the 2014-15 school year will be held March 17 through April 11, for all children entering kindergarten next year. Parents may stop by the school office for a registration packet.
