    Representing the Lake Roosevelt schools at the North Central Washington Regional Spelling Bee March 24 are Dylan Wiles and Showaway Hunt. Wiles is in seventh grade and the son of Jeannie Duclos. He won on the word "resume." Showaway Hunt is the second school champion and in the sixth grade. His parents are Jeremy and Rebecca Hunt.     Two fifth graders from the “highly capable” program made presentations before the Grand Coulee Dam School District board Monday night and held members spellbound with their subjects and quick wit.     An audition will be held for the Missoula Children’s Theatre (MCT) production of RUMPELSTILTSKIN Monday, March 7, 2016, at the Grand Gallery Theatre in Grand Coulee from 4 to 6 p.m. All those auditioning should arrive between 3:30 and 4:00 p.m., and plan to stay for the full two hours.     A number of fifth-grade students, all part of a "highly capable" program, made presentations before two third-grade classes recently at Lake Roosevelt Elementary. The students selected a topic they were interested in, then planned a program centered around a written report and slide shows.     Lake Roosevelt’s seniors are headed to California for their special school year-end trip. The proposal was presented to the Grand Coulee Dam School District directors Monday night by Associated Student Body President Devan Black, and after a brief discussion, the board approved the request to travel. The board learned that 25 seniors are eligible to make the trip. They will leave Sunday, May 29, and return Tuesday, May 31.   • BBCC has scholarship funds for childcare workers

    Big Bend Community College has received $30,000 in grant funds to provide scholarships and services to help childcare workers earn a degree or certificate in Early Childhood Education. The Early Achievers Scholarships provide financial help for tuition, books, and student support. There are four “stackable” certificates and an associate degree offered in BBCC’s Early Childhood Education Program (www.bigbend.edu/ece).     Nespelem Elementary School got a Christmas present Thursday night when electric utility representatives presented a big check at the school's annual Christmas Program. Nespelem Valley Electric Cooperative President Ralph Rise and Manager Dan Simpson attended the event and surprised the crowd with the announcement just before children started singing.     NESPELEM — The Nespelem School board of directors Monday night approved the appointment of Zekkethal “Val” Vargas-Thomas as a director in Position 1, the seat just being vacated by Patrick Marchand, who did not seek re-election.     The search for a new superintendent for the Grand Coulee Dam School District officially got underway Tuesday. Applications open first for candidates from within the district and will remain open until Jan. 4, 2016. The board has scheduled an application screening period Jan. 5–8, for members to screen any internal candidates. An interview schedule has been set for Jan. 12–13.   • BBCC creates new 'STEM culture'

    A new "STEM culture" has emerged at Big Bend Community College as a result of a federal grant now in its fifth and final year, the college says. The college has recorded a 200-percent increase in student use of the STEM Center this year. With glass walls and abundant natural light, the center provides 62 hours per week of tutoring and supplemental instruction. Demand is so great, the center is open on Sundays.   • Nespelem school to seek levy

    Nespelem School District will ask voters to support a four-year levy in February. The school board voted Monday night to pass a resolution for the $36,000 levy, which would replace the current operations and maintenance levy and gain the tiny district state “levy equalization” funds that would likely total more than a million dollars over the four years. The levy, proposed by Superintendent Rich Stewart, would remain at $36,000 each year and not increase, with a tax rate of about $2.49 per $1,000 of assessed value on real property.
