High on the list of things to do for the school board is to find a new superintendent. Present superintendent, Dr. Dennis Carlson, has indicated to the board that he plans to retire when his contract is up, June 30, 2016. Carlson has been in the district for five years. Nespelem School District’s board of directors Monday night heard an appeal by long-time teacher Rudy Christianson, retired, who has objected for a year to the rate he was paid for substitute teaching at the start of the 2014-15 school year, as the district found itself short of several teachers and a superintendent/principal. How could anyone argue about the town of Coulee Dam being a "Tree City?" Councilmember Gayle Swagerty said this week that there are officially 680 trees in the town. The emphasis on trees was a part of the Arbor Day celebration Oct. 21, at Lake Roosevelt school and one of the requirements needed to be named a "Tree City" for 2015. Eighth graders sign for early state funds commitment Olympia — Over 33,000 — 91 percent — of last year’s eighth-grade students signed up for the College Bound Scholarship program by the June 30 deadline. This cohort, the graduating class of 2019, is the largest since the program’s inception in 2007, the Washington Student Achievement Council said Monday in a statement. The Grand Coulee Dam School District is contracting with Coulee Medical Center to provide supervisory nursing services for the new school complex in Coulee Dam. The school board approved a measure that will provide two days of on-site registered nurse care at the schools, and also provide consultation when needed. The school also has two practical nurses who provide care, one at each school, five days a week. The new Raider sculpture at the new educational complex in Coulee Dam will be officially dedicated at 10 a.m. Tuesday, Sept. 8, the opening day of school. The 7-foot-tall metal sculpture has been at the front of the Lake Roosevelt Schools complex for a couple of months, as if to welcome all those who enter the grounds.
