The Lake Roosevelt Schools music department just won a $6,250 grant. Karen Pace, music director ,said the grant was given through the umbrella of the Washington Music Education Association. Pace directs four bands in the district and the district’s choir, for a total of about 165 students, Pace said Friday, plus elementary music. Shee put in for the grant in March and received word that the grant was coming through for the district earlier in May. This year’s senior class is planning a trip to Seattle and places beyond for its “senior trip.” But the 25 seniors and four adult chaperones will have to be “early birds” if they expect to catch the bus before it pulls out at 5 a.m. for the two-day annual event scheduled for June 2-3. Some 60 sixth-graders, 50 from Lake Roosevelt and 10 from Nespelem, will get the “Tall Timbers” experience May 17-19 when they head for the outdoor education location near Leavenworth. Each year, for the past several, Lake Roosevelt and Nespelem sixth-graders have traveled to Tall Timbers, an outdoor recreation/education resort nestled in the mountains about 10 miles out of Leavenworth. Renowned Native American artist and politician Enoch Kelly Haney visited students in grades six through 12 from Nespelem Elementary School and Lake Roosevelt High School in the LR gym on Thursday. Bert Smith, a Coulee Dam High School alumnus, had introduced Haney to Kim Stanger, the Indian Education director at Lake Roosevelt, who helped organize the event. The school boards from the Grand Coulee Dam District and Nespelem District met recently and focused their discussions on the calendars for the next two school years. As a new approach to setting the school calendar, Grand Coulee Dam District Superintendent Paul Turner opted to present a two-year calendar plan to the respective boards. Turner reviewed it with his own board in February and board Chair Joette Barry requested a review with Nespelem before passage. Curriculum, students, and staff received the most comments from a recent Lake Roosevelt School survey that was made available to patrons in the area. The survey was taken to provide some guidance to a team of school district personnel and local residents who work together in developing information for a Strategic Plan that will shape school activity for the next few years. Washington State University’s President’s Honor Roll for the 2016 Fall semester included three students from Coulee Dam. Listed were Scott Abrahamson, Devan Black and Kayley Duclos. The honor roll recognizes students who stand above the rest with excellent academic performance. For eight weeks in November and December, this group of six girls earned a NASA diploma by working on special science curriculum designed by NASA around the International Space Station program. They learned about different types of sciences involved in the ISS. Each week the students were assigned a different mission. A cafeteria at Lake Roosevelt Schools roared to life with music, lights, and dancing last this month as more than 75 percent of the classes of 2021 and 2022 attended the dance. As students began jamming to the music, seventh-grader Reniff Herndon took a broom to the floor as an impromptu partner at the Jan. 20 dance in the elementary cafeteria.
