1 Years Ago A large fire burning on the Colville Reservation has scorched thousands of acres, threatened many homes and blanketed the area with black smoke. The Hopkins Canyon Complex fire began Saturday afternoon when a lighting storm blew through the area, starting five fires eight miles west of Nespelem. Lifelong rancher Norman McClure has been earning national recognition for his lifetime of volunteer work and good range management. McClure, a lifelong resident of Nespelem, recently... Full story
As absurd as it is starting to appear, the current discussion between Grand Coulee and Electric City regarding their police services contract at least serves to illustrate why an area with a tiny population continues to burden itself with four separate towns where one would do nicely. The problem is we’re too focused — on ourselves. Electric City is now considering the possibility of launching its own police department rather than accept the sticker shock of a proposed huge increase in the rate it pays to Grand Coulee for the service. Tha... Full story
Since it’s been decided to repair/replace the roof of the high school gym, this would be an opportune time to install solar panels to generate electricity. This would reduce the power bill for the school district. The savings would probably be enough to pay the cost of the solar panels. Jack McKissen Grand Coulee... Full story
The very first column I wrote for the paper, "Missing the missing trees," had a section in it about a dog that was walked by her master in those trees. (Ironically, more trees and shrubs are being ripped out of the North Dam area as we speak). Well, that dog was Pooka, and she has edited her last paper with her master and watered her last bush. A lot of you who frequented The Star, or knew the Hunters, knew the white scruffy canine that went just about everywhere they did. You knew Pooka. Many... Full story
1 Years Ago Grand Coulee Police Officer, Dan Holland, saved a Grand Coulee woman from a house fire Friday night. At 2:27 a.m. the report came in as a brush fire at Nancy Fish's home. Seconds later it was considered a structure fire. Officer Holland responded and woke Mrs. Fish up who was sleeping and more than likely saved her life. Two LRHS basketball players have been asked to play on the Elite State Team this summer. Jessica Loe, a junior, and Steve Breeze, recently graduated, will both get... Full story
Spending more than a million dollars to reside and reroof old school buildings, construct stares and fix tennis courts shouldn’t have to happen, but it’s a good thing that it will. Apparently, that’s due to good stewardship of the construction process for the new K-12 school complex and some good timing and decent luck during the bidding phase. Despite that good management, we should not lose site of the fact that buildings and property deteriorate and will again require repairs. If that means a few more dollars from each of us per year to so... Full story
We went to the light show with our grandchildren on Thursday night, June 5, and thoroughly enjoyed it. The colors and story were a great history lesson for us all. I remember going by at least every fall and winter on trips to relatives at Nespelem and hockey trips to camps in Canada. What a great thing the animals, eagles, army trucks, fish, etc. were. My granddaughter wanted to go to the fire station in Grand Coulee because she eventually wants to be an EMT. The guys were great about talking to her about the ambulance and other things to do... If you can’t say something nice, then don’t say anything at all. That is what my mother and grandparents told me a lot over my younger years, and I am sure you were told the same. I try and always keep that in mind when I write this little portion of the paper. As well as use that thought process in everyday life. I have not always been able to do that, I have said unkind things to many loved ones and strangers alike. OK, now that that is off my chest, I have some things to say about things going on in Coulee Country. We all know that I wri... Full story
Later this year, Alan Mulally will leave Ford Motor Company. On July 1, he turns the reins over to 53-year-old Mark Fields, closing a storied career at Ford and Boeing. While he hasn’t divulged his plans, hopefully he will bring his talents to government. Mulally inspires people with his confidence, humility and charisma. His turnaround of Ford has been spectacular. Yes, government is different than the private sector, but anyone who can bring together people with diverse interests and varied b... Full story
1 Years Ago In what resembled a crime scene from television, area law enforcement closed down Pole Park for several hours Friday until a U.S. Army bomb squad could safely dispose of a foot high round of unexploded ammunition. The bomb was disposed of after four hours with no problems. Local athlete, Mike Williams, a sophomore at Lake Roosevelt returned from the State's Special Olympics with a first place medal in the softball throw, a second in the 200-meter walk and a fifth in the 100-meter... Apparently, the mayor of Grand Coulee does not want his police department serving Electric City. That seems the most reasonable way to interpret his proposed tripling of the cost Grand Coulee charges Electric City for answering calls to Electric City. Why this might be is a matter for speculation. On a more hopeful note, the same two cities will explore the possibility of effectively completing a nearly community-wide walking trail. Crossing the causeway and joining Electric City and Grand Coulee with a pedestrian pathway would enhance local li... Full story
I wanted to just say a couple things about the article in today’s paper regarding this subject. First, I was at that meeting also. It states in the article that it all started over an inspection by state DOH at the request of Mayor Wilder. I have to disagree with that. That is when Mayor Wilder had to make it public information. It also states that he requested the inspection because of a couple complaints. I don’t think those complaints had anything to do with the state of the ambulance but were rather more fuel for the complainant’s fire. Tru... Full story

My answers to this question is the same as why I take flowers to the cemetery anytime: To show respect to a loved one that has passed away (not limited to family members). Memorial Day was designated to show respect for those that have served our country “Veterans.” But it is a good day to give flowers to all friends and loved ones that have passed. Many of us take flowers more than once a year. I don’t like the term “graves,” but some spots at cemeteries have flowers of some kind year round. Each cemetery has it’s own rules. Often times the c... Full story
It was another whirlwind weekend of projects, friends and graduation celebrations. As we visited with friends and people we call family these last few days, some things came to light, and smiles settled in to our faces that will be there for awhile. So travel with us … Friday night a neon, rainbow colored unicorn named Humphrey slipped into our lives again (an obvious mystery person). We reminisced and laughed hard about the adventures and memories of this mythical creature and will cherish this... Full story
1 Years Ago Two females sustained injuries Sunday when a rifle that a boy was putting away in his truck accidentally went off. The bullet grazed one female on the arm and hit the other in the shoulder. They both were treated at Coulee Community Hospital and an investigation into the incident is underway by Colville Tribal Police. Charles Toulou, Charles Bart, Leonard Holt and Eddie Covington all received their honorary LRHS Diplomas Saturday, along with the 43 graduates of Lake Roosevelt. All f... Full story
A few years ago, the Washington State Department of Health (DOH) received a complaint about the Coulee Dam ambulance service. They took note of dirty and unsanitary conditions, expired medications and supplies, non-functioning or defective critical-care equipment, inaccessibility to the supplies needed to stock the ambulance, and more. The town was put on notice and required to file a compliance plan in May, 2011. The DOH closed the case the following month without taking disciplinary action because the town had corrected the deficiencies and... Full story
The 2nd Harvest Thrivent Food Truck was at Zion Lutheran Church May 30th handing out 7,584 pounds of food to 215 families. It took 26 helpers to keep up with handing out products. The Washington Beef Council furnished three-pound roasts and a person to pass them out. The $400 to bring the truck here was paid for by the Grant County Thrivent Board with helping hands project (our helpers). It took a lot of people working together, as all volunteer projects do. A big pat on the back and many thanks to all volunteers; without them these different... Full story
In our school history we have retired and put to pasture some of our mascots. Soon a Pirate will join them. Please, a moment of silence for our fallen identities of the past. Grand Coulee Tigers, Coulee Dam Beavers, Center School Dolphins, Grand Coulee Dam Junior High Panthers and now joining them are the Center School Eagles and the Grand Coulee Dam Middle School Pirates. If Saturday night was the entire new light show (as it didn’t start until about 10:30 instead of 10 and was over by 11), I am truly disappointed. I had heard it was much longer than the old one. The story is fantastic! The pictures and wording are almost all black and white, just a few small spots of color. The wording is waytoo big to watch up close, in places like the VAC and the lower park, it is blurred. It could probably be better read from Crown Point or at least the area across from the motel and casino. There are largeanimals and o... Full story
Or rambling as The Star newspaper, Shut Up Mr Utz does. If AT&T buys Direct TV for the billions they are offering, hope they will offer services to all of North America. Will they again become the best, most secure stock market investment they once were? Will the stupid Feds allow them to be a regulated monopoly as they once were? Or will they become a thief as our local fuel stations have been allowed to become. I'm very hopeful that I will be able to shop at home again when the new service station opens in Grand Coulee. It was nice reading a new perspective in this week’s editorial about our local gas prices. I don’t like paying more for gas than anyone else, but I believe the Positive greatly outweighs the Negative. The Positive: Convenience, professionally run operations that represent our community well, service, jobs, jobs and jobs — for our local community. The Negative: Slightly higher gas prices. In my opinion, the Positive aspects greatly outweigh the Negative. I have had the chance to meet several of the Madsens’ employees, all of which appreci... Full story
A special thanks to my hero, my granddaughter Kati Goodall, for knowing what to do and saving my life by giving me a shot when I passed out at the ball game. I’m not sure how you knew what to do, but you did. I would also like to thank all the people who helped me when I was down. I don’t know all your names, but there was Peggy Sandgren, Steve Harrington, Ben Alling and the ambulance crew to mention a few, and the staff at Coulee Medical Center were wonderful. I am here today because of Kati and all my friends and neighbors. I am blessed to... Full story
