    The district that operates 30 libraries and two bookmobiles across North Central Washington has set a community goal of reading 300 books by Jan. 13. Register at www.ncwlibraries.org and log the number of books read to get into a drawing for prizes.   • Retreat center reservations reopen Jan. 3

    The Washington State Parks and Recreation Commission announced the reopening of park retreat centers beginning in spring 2022. On Jan. 3 at 7 a.m., parks will begin accepting retreat center reservations for the 2022 Memorial Day weekend and beyond. The retreat centers have been closed since March of 2020 due to COVID-19.     Rachael Dowlen and Andrew Salinas play the parts of Mary and Joseph with a doll as Jesus in the manger Saturday night at the Coulee Dam Community Church on Central Drive. The church put on the display, complete with livestock (goats, alpaca), a choir singing carols, and campfires with people visiting, both Friday and Saturday nights.     Elmer City folks were excited for the arrival of Santa and Mrs. Clause Monday night on the top of a Grand Coulee fire engine, along with other seasonal favorites of kids - Elsa and Anna, and even the Grinch. The visit was arranged by the Grand Coulee Dam Area Chamber of Commerce. The firefighters in Elmer City were ready to receive their guests and had people warming up by a campfire while they waited.   • STCU surprises, delights Season of Giving recipients

    In response to continuing need that’s intensified by the pandemic, STCU continued its tradition of year-end giving, surprising more than 30 community organizations with checks ranging from $1,000 to $30,000 to assist with their work of providing basic needs to Inland Northwest families. In addition, 92 organizations where employees volunteered in 2021 will receive checks of $25 to $1,000 from the Spokane-based credit union.
