    Grand Coulee Police 3/11 - Police entered a home on Cardinal Road NE because of a report of domestic violence. A couple who had given another couple permission to stay there wanted them to leave. The officer asked the four to work it out, but getting the four to sit down and talk about it didn’t produce the desired result. Police advised dispatch of the attempt. - A FedEx driver told police that a car that had its front wheels off was blocking the road at Spring Canyon and Plum Point.   • New hatchery at Chief Joseph scheduled for summer opening

    The Chief Joseph Hatchery is scheduled for completion in May and should be rearing chinook salmon in July. The $49 million facility near Chief Joseph Dam will, by 2015, raise 2.9 million salmon a year to help replace the fisheries lost after the construction of Grand Coulee and Chief Joseph dams, which halted the upstream migrations of salmon.     Three quilters gather to work on hospice quilts for Comfort Care Hospices in Omak and Spokane. The miniature quilts are being made for children and adults who have terminal illnesses.     Income tax time is here! Free tax preparation is being offered at the Grand Coulee Senior Center again this year. Volunteers trained in cooperation with IRS and AARP will be available every Tuesday, Feb 12 - April 9 from 9:00 AM to 2:30 PM. This service is available to anyone with low or middle income. You do not have to be seniors or members of the senior center to take advantage of this free help. However, special attention is given to those 60 or older. Free e-filing is also available.     Grand Coulee Police 3/4 - A woman on West Cardinal Road told police that someone is entering her house and taking items and exchanging others in their place. She said it has happened with her washing machine, vacuum cleaner and a host of items. She stated that someone had taken the long screws out of her door and replaced them with short ones to make access easier.     A total of 18 girls each gained a title at the Feb. 16 Queen of Hearts pageant held at the Village Cinema. Organizer Heather Downs said it was standing room only at the theater, the use of which was donated for the event. Downs said the top overall title of “Coulee Sweetheart,” chosen by a secret judge, went to Melissa Merriman, of Electric City. Police suggested to the subject that she go to the hospital, but she stated that if she took her oxygen she would be fine. 2/27 - A school employee advised police of a possible sexual molestation of a female student.     Grand Coulee Police 2/19 - An officer checked on a reported traffic hazard near milepost 24 in Electric City and found a trailer disconnected from its tractor and blocking the roadway.     Charles Gurney, a Civil War veteran, opened his first seedhouse in 1866 (Victory Horticultural Library, www.saveseeds@victoryseeds.com). Forty years later, Charles, his seven sons, and a nephew incorporated as Gurney Seed and Nursery Company. I started reading the “Gurney Catalog” from cover to cover in 1969. Not counting a failed attempt to start carnations from seed, that was the year I started gardening. Early on, I didn’t buy seeds from catalogs, but the Gurney Catalog had other uses.     Grand Coulee Police 2/12 - An official with the Head Start program at Center School told police that someone had taken the lock off a storage shed where games and toys are stored. Nothing was taken, the report stated. It was thought that the entry was at the same time as a number of metal items was taken from a fenced-in area near the kitchen. - USBR Plant Protection asked police to check on a vehicle on Bureau of Reclamation property near the fish pens in Electric City.
