    Ten Years Ago The man who threatened to blow up Grand Coulee Dam was released last week from Spokane County Jail. Richard Vialpando was released after five months in jail. Laura Dick, of Nespelem, won a statewide contest on anti-drugs at the Washington State Substance Abuse Prevention Summit in Yakima. Laura’s motto was “Show the world that we can be drug free.” A team of four freshman isfinding out that academics can be cool.     No Chamber Meeting The Grand Coulee Dam Area Chamber of Commerce will not be meeting this week due to the Thanksgiving Day holiday. Regular meeting will resume on Thursday, Dec. 5 at noon at the American Legion Post for decorating for the Vintners and Brewers event.     Grand Coulee Police 11/11 - A Continental Heights man was taken to jail on a charge of domestic violence and violating a no-contact order. The report stated that the man shoved out of the door and spat on a woman with whom he had been in a relationship. Then he went to Safeway where he attempted to pull her hair, the report stated. - A Burdin Boulevard man was in possession of a $2,000 air purification device taken from near the Moose Lodge.     A Bureau of Reclamation employee was critically injured Monday as a fire started at a switch in the John W. Keys III Pump Generating Plant. Daniel McCulloch, 54, was flown to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle with burn injuries. Another employee was treated locally for smoke inhalation. McCulloch, an operator, has worked for the bureau since 2008. He was listed in serious condition at Harborview's intensive care unit Tuesday, a medical center spokesperson said.     Electric City’s council decided last Tuesday night to stick with its policy, at least for now, on how it spends its hotel/motel tax revenues. Its current policy puts half of its hotel/motel revenues in a reserve fund and makes the other half available to promote the area. Currently, the city has $245,416 in its hotel/motel reserve fund. Using 2012 figures, and the amount budgeted by the city for this year, that will put $34,400 into the reserve fund and make the same amount available for promotion purposes.     City supports health district After a presentation by Grant County Health District’s Jeffrey Ketchel, the Electric City council voted to give the district $2,000. The district had asked for $2 per resident or $2,000 from the city to help with its outside expenses.     The Colorama Rodeo was named “Rodeo of the Year” for the second time in a row at a meeting of the Pro-West Rodeo Association last Saturday night.     Grand Coulee Police 11/4 - A woman living on Roosevelt Drive told police that when she came home she noticed her 55-inch TV and other articles had been taken.     Carol Visker, the senior municipal clerk in the coulee area, has resigned her position at Coulee Dam. Visker, who has been at Coulee Dam for 12 years, has taken a position at Almira/Coulee/Hartline schools. “She has done a great job for us and she and I have had a good run together,” Mayor Quincy Snow said.     Ten Years Ago For the Chistopherson family, the fighting in Iraq hits close to home. On Oct. 30th much of the Washington Army National Guard mobilized including Capt. Chris Christopherson of the National Guards 81st Armor Brigade. The tour of duty will separate him from his wife and family until sometime next year.     Bill Brashears passed away in Grand Coulee on Tuesday, Oct. 29, 2013. He was born November 26, 1928, in Leola, Ark., the second of three sons to Bryan and Beatrice Brashears. The family moved to Brewster, Wash., when Bill was 10 years old. Another move when Bill was a freshman in high school took them to Eatonville, Wash., near Mt. Rainier. In his senior year he began dating Betty Mae Kronquist and they married in August 1948. They were married for 65 years. Bill began working at the age of 10... Full story
