People like getting packages. It's a little bit like Christmas. And someone who has been delivering peoples' packages in the area for 40 years is retiring from United Parcel Service. Merle Roberts started working for UPS on March 23, 1979, working out of what Roberts describes as "a little makeshift unloading dock" in Grand Coulee, "outside year round" before UPS had opened an office on Van Tyne Avenue 13 years later. The job was Roberts' first "real job" aside from doing some farm work in the...

Cathy LaPlace’s criticism of having half days of school for the state tourney was a bit miscalculated. I find it hard to believe that she or anyone else would think that a sport affects only the participants. Lake Roosevelt’s teams represent the identity of the schools and are a source of pride for both students and the Grand Coulee Dam Area community. On top of that, it’s a pleasure to read about the school’s success even if one doesn’t live there. I say congratulations to the schools and community and I hope to be there with you next year...

Is it right to disrupt school for hundreds of students because of a sport played by a small percentage of them? That was a topic of discussion at the Grand Coulee Dam School District’s Board of Directors meeting March 25. Cathy LaPlace addressed the board in the public-comment section of the meeting. LaPlace is the wife of Director George LaPlace, and the two have students in the district. Cathy LaPlace criticized the school’s last-minute decision to have two half-days of school in March because of the Raiders high school basketball team com...

Twenty Years Ago Work has begun on the expansion of Banks Lake Golf and Country Club. The Grand Coulee Dam is one of few dams which hasn’t been mentioned for removal, but according to economic consultant Bob Lonn, the disappearance of other dams in an effort to save fish populations will be damaging to the local economy. The continued slow crumbling of the hillside below Coulee Community Hospital and parallel to Fortuyn Road has forced the hand of the Grand Coulee Council to declare a city emergency. Going to state wrestling for the Raiders i...

The USBR’s Environmental Assessment for the proposed G19-21 update states that the project would have at most 103 workers and “could result in an increased enrollment of five stu...

Cougar sightings continued last week, but none have been captured. All the cougars have been seen just beyond the end of Central Drive in Coulee Dam. First baby of...
