    Ten Years Ago Armed with only garden hoses, several Coulee Dam residents helped prevent a fire from destroying two Coulee Dam homes last Friday. Coulee Dam Mayor Quincy Snow said strong winds knocked a poplar tree over on Yucca Street. That caused a short in the line at the pole behind Dennis King’s home at 702 Tulip Street and started the fire. Village Cinema - Movie of the week: Bruce Almighty.     A chamber of commerce-sponsored meeting of community leaders Monday selected a committee whose goal is to approach the three municipalities that collect hotel/motel tax money about the possible formation of a tourism advisory board to oversee spending it. Many in the room clearly would like to see local municipal councils shake loose of nearly a half million dollars not being used to increase tourism, the intent of the law that authorizes the tax.     New activities will add to this year’s upcoming Festival of America, which will stretch over three days this year for the traditional July 4 celebration in the lower Visitor Center park below Grand Coulee Dam. Chamber of commerce Manager Peggy Nevsimal said a number of family-friendly, carnival-like games have been included this year on Saturday, July 6.     Evelyn Doris Skorheim of Coulee Dam died of natural causes on May 3, 2013. She was 90 years old. Doris was born in Norton, North Dakota, on June 18, 1922. She was raised on the family farm and after high school, went to nursing school in St. Paul, Minn. She married Kenneth H. Skorheim and they settled in Coulee Dam in 1947. Doris was active in many community activities including Lady Lions, Colorama Festival, Coulee Dam Chamber of Commerce, Girl Scouts, Visitors Information Center, local schools... Full story

    Ten Years Ago Money flowed into Coulee Community Hospital at an all-time high in March as the hospital treated more patients than anticipated. “It indicates that the community shows confidence in us,” said CCH Administrator Mike Wiltermood.     Ten Years Ago The public has the chance to help determine what proposed playground changes will look like in Coulee Dam. The town council last week approved spending approximately $25,000 to purchase new playground equipment. A donation by General Electric Co. could ensure that this year’s Fourth of July festival will feature the largest fireworks show yet.     Colorama huge hit Despite the fact that new Grand Coulee Dam Area Chamber of Commerce Manager Peggy Nevsimal broke a collarbone Friday night, which kept her from seeing the fruits of most of her work on the event, reviews have been largely positive.     Tickets for the Colorama Carnival went on sale last week at nine locations in the area. The Paradise Amusement Carnival will be held near North Dam Park, May 9-11, and is one of the featured attractions of the Colorama Festival. Tickets sell for $25 and are good for one full session.     The largest producer of hotel/motel taxes in the area proposed changes to the way the funds are used at a meeting of some 20 community people Monday. Pat Welton, managing partner of Sunbanks Lake Resort, stated that the three local municipalities that collect the tax are currently “hoarding” the money and releasing it bit by bit. The fourth local community, Elmer City, doesn’t have any campgrounds or motels within its borders.
