  • Study of joining cities unlikely next year

    Roger S Lucas|Dec 23, 2015

Prospects of a study in 2016 on the possibility of consolidating the cities of Grand Coulee and Electric City are unlikely. Hopes dimmed last week when $10,000 towards the study became a victim of Grand Coulee’s budget crunching. The hope had been that Electric City would follow through with $15,000 toward the study and that Grand Coulee would come up with another $15,000. Electric City’s $15,000 didn’t make it into its 2016 budget, and the $15,000 for Grand Coulee, which had already been whittled down to $10,000, didn’t make it either.... Full story

  • Historic registry might not be what you think

    Roger S Lucas and Scott Hunter|Dec 16, 2015

A state preservation official Thursday dispelled myths and disclosed some little-known facts about what happens when property is declared "historic" and entered on a registry. The Grand Coulee Dam Area Chamber of Commerce and the Town of Coulee Dam had invited Michael Houser, of the Department of Archaeology & Historic Preservation, to speak about the registry issue at a joint noon meeting last Thursday held in the community room at town hall. There was interest in the town to see if some of... Full story

  • It's time to do better at preserving our history

    Scott Hunter|Dec 9, 2015

This community has not done a good job of preserving its own history. Until recently, the home of the largest dam and largest powerplant in North America, and of one of the most important public works projects in the country’s history, hasn’t even had a museum; and even the one that’s struggling to survive is an underfunded all-volunteer effort. Now would be a good time to reverse this trend. When Mom’s Tavern, the last of the old buildings on the famous B Street in Grand Coulee, was demolished decades ago, the last authentic remnant of that... Full story

  • Cities consolidation outlook is cloudy

    Roger S Lucas|Dec 2, 2015

An effort to get talks going on consolidating two local cities may be in jeopardy. A decision Feb. 10, by Electric City’s council, to move forward in support of an independent study, was not a formal vote, according to City Clerk Jackie Perman. At the city council meeting on that date, a motion was made and seconded to move forward with providing up to $15,000 for a study by consultant SCJ Alliance, facilitated by the local chamber of commerce. The council was asked for a show of hands to show who was in favor of the idea. A majority of the c... Full story

  • Consolidation study awaits budget decisions

    Roger S Lucas|Nov 25, 2015

The idea of joining two or more local towns into one involves a lot of factors, not to mention public opinion, which might soon be addressed if two cities are willing to fund a consultant’s help. A proposed agreement between the Grand Coulee Dam Area Chamber of Commerce and SCJ Alliance to consider issues pertaining to consolidating Grand Coulee and Electric City is moving forward and awaits details of Grand Coulee’s 2016 budget decisions. The chamber hopes to enter into an agreement with the SCJ group from Wenatchee to provide planning service... Full story

  • Towns' tourism fund plans detailed

    Roger S Lucas|Nov 25, 2015

Three representatives of area organizations went mining for a slice of Grand Coulee’s lodging tax funds for 2016, and they came out winners. Now it all depends on the city council passing its new budget, a task that will likely happen in December. Peggy Nevsimal, executive director of the Grand Coulee Dam Area Chamber of Commerce, attended the city council last Tuesday to ask for $13,325, for advertising and promoting the area. She got it. George Kohout, president of the Ridge Riders Saddle Club, asked for $12,500. He got his amount. And Bob V... Full story

  • City sets plans to spend tourism funds

    Roger S Lucas|Nov 18, 2015

Electric City council agreed to the allotment of hotel/motel tax money for 2016 at its meeting last Tuesday and will consider keeping more than a quarter million dollars in tourism-promotion funds toward funding a pathway. The council tourism committee, made up of councilmembers Brad Parrish and Richard McGuire, recommended allotting the Grand Coulee Dam Area Chamber of Commerce $25,000 for tourism promotion, with the stipulation that $3,200 be taken from that amount to make up for overpayments the city made during 2015. • Race over the dam to be revived

    Scott Hunter|Nov 11, 2015

A run over the top of Grand Coulee Dam will be revived, even after its last organizers dropped it, if Kelly Buche has anything to say about it. Buche, a local accountant and active runner, is aggressively planning how to organize, promote and pull off a race that at one time in its long history drew 400 runners. Run the Dam can offer a lot to the running public if promoted the right way and set at the right time of year, Buche told the Coulee Area Park and Recreation District at their Nov. 2... Full story

  • Chamber, city in dispute over payments, use of funds

    Roger S Lucas|Nov 4, 2015

The relationship between the Grand Coulee Dam Area Chamber of Commerce and Electric City reached a new low this past week. While the relationship has been simmering for a long time, it spilled over Oct. 22, when the chamber’s weekly meeting was devoted to a perceived problem in how Electric City handles its hotel/motel money. There was even a suggestion that the chamber sue the city. The situation got worse last week when the chamber sent registered letters to all Electric City’s council members, its mayor, city clerk and the city att... Full story

  • Tourism efforts frustrated in the coulee

    Nov 4, 2015

Each year, the Grand Coulee Dam Area Chamber of Commerce makes formal requests to our local cities for lodging tax dollars, which we use to promote tourism and offset operational expenses for popular festivals. Grand Coulee and Coulee Dam have been generous with lodging tax dollars, which are generated by overnight camping and hotel/motel stays in their towns. Both last year and this, similar requests to Electric City have met with increasing resistance. While the city has given us some funding, their requesting process — which should be s... Full story

  • Couple wants a fiber mill at old school

    Roger S Lucas|Oct 21, 2015

A conditional-use permit may be the best way Grand Coulee can move forward to allow a Grand Coulee couple to purchase Center School. Mervin and MaryJo Monteith appeared before the planning commission last week to pursue interest in putting in a fiber processing center in the old Center School building. The city’s planning commission was unable to move forward on the issue because only Chairman Tammara Byers was present for the meeting.
