  • Food bank seeks canned goods (updated)

    Aug 13, 2025

Care and Share Food Bank is running short of some items and is hoping for some community assistance. “We are really in need of some canned goods, especially tuna and chili,” Manager Dave Noggles said. Although food bank volunteers will make the trip this week to get food from Second Harvest in Moses Lake, Noggles said, they needed to put the word out now about the need because that source is also tight on supplies. “We are not expecting the amount that we usually receive,” he said. “They have informed us that they are having trouble, also, wit... Full story

About 10 a.m. that Monday, July 14, Lynch, retired, had been headed to the post office and intended to next drive to the Downriver Trail for a walk along the Columbia River. Then he saw the smoke. • Volunteers finish a very busy week

    Jul 23, 2025

by Scott Hunter Local volunteers had at least 19 calls to emergencies last week, including four fires and 15 ambulance calls. After 18 of those, the next one came in at 11 a.m. Sunday to put out another fire: a campfire (already banned) at Jones Bay on Banks Lake. They put it out. That was after having left home almost 12 hours earlier to find a red glow near the airport in the middle of the night. The glow turned out to be on the other side Banks Lake up in Barker Canyon, to which Douglas...

  • Federal cuts make deficits worse for schools

    Scott Hunter|Jul 16, 2025

When they wrestled with how to allocate a pay boost not all covered by extra state money last month, school directors didn’t know the federal government had just announced it would not pay far more money Congress had already promised, money that would typically be paid the next day. That was June 30 as the Grand Coulee Dam School District Board of Directors learned the $136,000 the state would pay for a 2.5% cost-of-living increase next year wouldn’t cover the $679,000 of actual cost involved, leaving a $543,000 hole in the coming year’s distri...

    Shauneen Miranda|Jul 16, 2025

WASHINGTON — The Trump administration has put on hold $6.8 billion in federal funds for K-12 schools, according to an Education Department notice obtained by States Newsroom. The agency informed states on Monday that it would be withholding funding for several programs, including before- and after-school programs, migrant education and English-language learning, among other initiatives. But the agency notified states just a day ahead of July 1 — the date these funds are typically sent out as educators plan for the coming school year. “The Depar...

  • Separate events display excellence

    Jul 16, 2025

The area had a lot of visitors last weekend, thanks to some long-planned events. The annual powwow and rodeo in Nespelem brings in a lot of travelers, even if most of them plan to stay at the circle grounds at the arbor. And the Ridge Riders held what President Wayne Fowler says is an increasingly rare event, at least on the west side of the state - junior rodeos. One entrant told him she had to stay in Wilbur because she couldn't find accommodations here. Both events aim to strengthen family...

    Scott Hunter|Jul 9, 2025

Firefighters kept at least two smaller blazes from turning into bigger ones this week as wildland fuels turned tinder dry. One blaze took off quickly about 11 p.m. July 5, right after a loud bang at the south edge of the town of Coulee Dam, setting the hillside near the Visitor Center ablaze. Several agencies responded quickly, including the Bureau of Reclamation whose land was burning near the Columbia River Inn. Coulee Dam Volunteer Fire Department requested mutual aid, bringing in Grand...

  • Amazing

    John Adkins|Jul 9, 2025

Here are just a few things I’ve noticed recently that show we live in an area surrounded by amazing people. I was in awe watching the fire and law enforcement departments fight the recent fire and keep everyone safe in West Coulee Dam. Rick Paris stopped by and assured us things would be alright. People don’t get any better than him! The Festival of America was awesome. They didn’t skip a beat due to the theft of the Chamber’s trailer. Our local talent with Dylan and the teachers “Fuel for Ghosts” was great. Their genuine passion made it a f...
