It looks increasingly likely the Grand Coulee Police Department won’t exist for much longer. Instead, the city may contract with an outside entity for law enforcement within city limits — potentially the Soap Lake Police Department or the Grant County Sheriff’s Office — based on comments made at Tuesday night’s council meeting, and by outgoing interim police chief Levi Johnson in a phone call with The Star last week. Johnson confirmed he had put in his notice earlier this month, and his last day with the department is next week. Council m...
With roots in Seattle and Las Vegas, eight-piece band Monster Road brings funk and soul-infused covers of classic hits to Rockfest at Sunbanks Resort last weekend. It was the second year the resort hosted the rock 'n' roll weekend music festival, building on the success of the blues-roots-Americana fests that have been held there for 27 years. The Sunbanks reservations and operations manager said they had 120 campsites and houses reserved for Rockfest this year, compared to just 35 in 2023....
A Lake Roosevelt teacher’s recycling proposal won approval from the school board last week, a move he hopes will reduce the district’s waste footprint and perhaps even its garbage bill. The unanimous decision at the board’s Sept. 9 meeting means the district will begin collecting mixed paper and cardboard in a separate recycling bin provided by Sunrise Disposal. “[Sunrise] expects we may be able to eliminate a dumpster within 2 months of getting our program up and running,” wrote Aaron Derr, a 6th grade teacher at Lake Roosevelt Elementary. The Regional Board of Mayors has designated a Fall Cleanup Day at the Delano Transfer station, where residents can drop off yard waste free of charge, including leaves, grass clippings, tree trimmings and other “clean green” items. Fall Cleanup will be Saturday Oct. 26 during the transfer station’s regular hours: 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. This year all materials collected will be hauled to the city of Quincy’s compost facility. As compost, materials should not be bagged, and cannot contain lumber, dirt, rocks or other non-organic debris, accordi...
Organizers for Run the Dam say registration this year has almost doubled over last year, with participants coming from all over the western U.S., B.C., and as far away as Texas and Florida. Executive Director Kelly Buche said she expects to surpass 500 sign-ups, a milestone that has been her goal since she took over in 2016. That's thanks in part to a new marketing person, Buche said, but the run and the accompanying weekend festival is attracting more people by simple word of mouth, too. "The...

Coverage of an apparent shooting or shootings in Delano in the early hours of Sept. 17 will appear in next week’s issue of The Star. The police report was not released by the time this issue went to press Tuesday night, and Interim GCPD Chief Levi Johnson could not be reached Tuesday afternoon. Grand Coulee Clerk Lorna Pearce confirmed Johnson was at the Delano call, but did not provide further details....
Washington State Parks needs the help of its visitors to stop the spread of invasive pests that can cause significant damage to our forests. State parks have a wide variety of natural native and planted non-native trees and forests, which puts them at risk for almost every worrisome invasive pest. Parks are of particular concern because they welcome visitors from all over the state and country who often bring their own camping supplies for their stay. This includes the main culprit for invasive pest transfer: firewood. But the battle to prevent...
Once again, an old trope resurfaces. This time around, the rumor that pet cats and dogs are being kidnapped and eaten by immigrants. Race baiting has some deep roots in our nation. The consequences cause fear, repulsion or outright hatred of a specific group of people. Decades ago, this story appeared in Minneapolis-St. Paul. “…that immigrants from Southeast Asia eat cats and dogs circulated recently in Minneapolis-St. Paul.” Reporters sought comment from the Humane Society. “We got letters...
I wanted to thank you for your thoughtful editorial coverage on “Mental health troubles and news,” and the article “Man rescued from bridge standoff” in the September 11 edition of The Star. You are absolutely correct: “... Hope has to be part of the coverage” you provide, and is a reminder that each of us can offer hope to those who are struggling. Each of the community members who noticed the at-risk individual on the bridge and contacted the appropriate authorities, as well as the worker from Nespelem Valley Electric Co-Op, who was willi...
Just wanted to send a shout out to the Coulee Wall Variety Store. They opened up on Labor Day so that I could get some kitten milk replacement for some sick kittens I was asked to foster. A business and folks like this are truly a godsend to this community. Brittany Belgarde...
Excellent letter from Jim Catlow about “a vote for Trump is actually a vote for”. He does a great job of laying out why people should vote for Trump and not Harris. People need to get over their “TDS - Trump Derangement Syndrome” and vote for what is best for this country. Do I wish that the Republicans had picked someone other than Trump, yes I do, but in this election he is the only choice for preserving the greatness of this country. Glen Graevell...

A number of years ago while living in Bothell my personal doctor and I became close friends. When I moved there, our clinic had about half a dozen doctors, and I chose the youngest as the one I wanted to go to. When my visit to see him came to a close, he would always take about five minutes to learn what I was interested in. It probably was not the best thing to allow, by either of us. One time, at the close of my visit, he said he intended to go to the Pavarotti concert and wondered if my wife and I would be interested in going. He got...
September 20, 1850, the U.S. Congress abolished the slave trade in the District of Columbia. This was part of a legislative package called the Compromise of 1850. The District of Columbia was founded in 1800 and enslaved people lived and worked in the nation’s capital. Slavery continued to exist in Washington D.C. under the slave code until April 16, 1862. It was on this date that President Lincoln signed legislation freeing the 3,000 African Americans bound by the district’s slave code. Source(s): Library of Congress Compiled by Bob Val...

He told the officer that he doesn’t drink but the officer smelled alcohol and noted b...
Soccer With lots of youth on their side, the Lady Raiders soccer team is off to a rough start at 0-3 with losses to Bridgeport, Liberty Bell, and Brewster out of the way and lots of learning going on. They made two goals in each game this week - 5-2 against Bridgeport, 4-2 against Liberty Bell, 10-2 against Brewster last night. Chaffee said team Captain...
