  • Coulee Dam may allow ATVs on streets

    Scott Hunter|Updated Jul 3, 2018

Coulee Dam may soon allow the driving of all-terrain vehicles on city streets, if the council adopts a law similar to those passed by Electric City and Grand Coulee recently. It’s already happening, anyway, and state law allows it on the highway that runs through town, Councilmember Keith St. Jeor said, but Coulee Dam hasn’t adopted standards for the practice. St. Jeor said at the June 27 council meeting that citizens have been bringing it up and he’d like to see the town adopt the same standards passed by the Legis...

  • Awaken

    Jesse Utz|Updated Jul 3, 2018

A lot can happen in a week or two. From Father’s Day to the 4th of July is a busy time in most families. Camping, vacations, fishing trips and camps can take up a lot of this timeframe, but sometimes things can change, and things can look a little different. Also, depending on who you are, things can change. I could write about a little blue truck or a union gathering. But I am not today. I could talk about the “Best Father’s Day Ever” or on running into a Proctor in Pasco,...

  • Jetsons cartoon robots now reality

    Don Brunell|Updated Jul 3, 2018

The Jetsons television series about a space-age family featuring “Rosey the Robot” gave us a preview of life with robots, kiosks and interactive television. In 1962, it was a fictitious cartoon; however, in 2018, many of the Jetsons’ conveniences are a reality. Take fast-food restaurants, for example. Faced with a growing shortage of workers and increased costs, some are turning to robots to flip hamburgers and clean grills — mundane, unpleasant and hard-to-fill jobs. Wendy’s...

  • Shimmering clouds and good wine

    Bob Valen|Updated Jul 3, 2018

Last week I got an email with a photo showing a cloud that had erupted into a rainbow of color. There is a name for what happened: it’s called cloud iridescence or irisation. Some call it cloud rainbows. What happens is individual ice crystals or water droplets in the cloud reflect, refract and disperse incoming sunlight. It’s like what happens when a rainbow develops. A rainbow is caused by reflection, refraction and dispersion of light in water droplets, causing a spe...

  • Make it a happy Independence Day

    Scott Hunter|Updated Jul 3, 2018

The most important thing for Americans to remember on July 4, 2018, is that we are Americans. Regardless of political party affiliation, philosophy, religion, creed or race, no matter if we are conservative or liberal, veterans or war protesters, soldiers or civilians, we are Americans. We are petty and noble, hateful and loving, proud and humble, but we are Americans. We may differ, as we always have, on what that even means, or on how to solve our problems, but we will eventually rediscover that we are Americans. So enjoy...

  • An explanation of Grand Coulee's residential zoning and short-term rental rules

    Jacob Wagner|Updated Jul 3, 2018

People who live in areas that are zoned as low-density residential areas in Grand Coulee aren’t allowed to operate a business there. That includes short-term rentals, such as bed-and-breakfast places, even if owner-occupied, or through AirBnB or other websites specializing in short-term rentals. The city’s code states that it’s OK for friends or family to stay in an extra room at someone’s house. Or, in the case of a motorhome, a guest can stay for up to 14 days within a three-month period, but that no rent can be charged...

  • Land tortoise has quite the adventure

    Jacob Wagner|Updated Jul 3, 2018

Sarah Shanning was quite upset when she couldn't find her 7-year-old African land tortoise, Mrs. Doubtfire, who escaped from her yard in Elmer City on May 26. Shanning put up fliers looking for Mrs. Doubtfire, and took out an ad in The Star newspaper. Weeks later, on June 15, Shanning was reunited with Mrs. Doubtfire while at her job at the Tee Pee Drive In. "We were beginning to lose hope about finding her, and then there she was!" Shanning said of the reptile, which she...

    Jacob Wagner|Updated Jul 3, 2018

A large collection of logs and debris floating at Crescent Bay should be all tugged away by a tugboat sometime between mid- and late July. "The Bureau of Reclamation has a contract with Columbia Navigation to collect the logs that come down the river during the spring runoff," said USBR Public Affairs Officer Lynne Brougher. "The logs that are at Crescent Bay and the logs that have collected behind Grand Coulee Dam in the Forebay area will be gathered together and Columbia...

  • Craftsman's busy hands yielding solid art

    Jacob Wagner|Updated Jul 3, 2018

Some mothers get a card or flowers for Mother's Day, others get a customized granite walkway in the backyard. Ron Williams, who owns Guaranteed Welding, made his mother, Alice Jimeson, a deck-of-cards themed walkway for her home in Electric City, complete with a large spade, club, heart, diamond, and, for the coup de gras, a joker. Jimeson loves to play cards. The joker's face alone took about 12 hours, Williams said, and the surrounding pieces, such as the jester hat, took...
