The Lake Roosevelt Raiders girls’ soccer team is learning the sport from the ground up. The girls played their first game Sept. 8, losing to formidable Brewster, 11-0. Despite the loss to the Bears, who LR Head Coach Casey Moore says is going to be one of the top teams in the district, Moore is very proud of the way her team played. “They didn’t give up the whole game, despite being down by so much,” she said. “They pushed themselves very hard.” The Raiders played with only 12 players on the team that game, including one with a minor injur... Lake Roosevelt Raider Football players continued to be students of the game as NFL punter T.J. Conley and EWU Big Sky champion offensive lineman Cassidy Curtis came to their practice last Wednesday. The guests spoke to the Raiders before their practice. The players listened intently to their advice before heading to the field, where Conley and Curtis ran drills with the younger players, guiding them on the proper techniques of how to kick a football, or be more effective as a lineman. The Raider football team showed a lot of promise on Saturday when they played Bridgeport in a pre-season “jamboree.” The Raiders scored three touchdowns, while only allowing one during the series of short scrimmages against Manson and Bridgeport. Sophomore quarterback Steven Flowers threw a touchdown pass to senior wide receiver Nathaniel Hall. Junior running back Beau Michel ran in a touchdown. Flowers ran the third touchdown in himself, showing that he is a dual-threat QB capable of both passing and running. On the defensive end, def... Full story

I am, as an intern, experiencing my first bout of what can only aptly be referred to as Dilbert Syndrome or Office Fatigue. I’ve been here at The Star for about seven months now. The hours, the days, the weeks, the months… all melt off the calendar, and I wonder where the time goes. Time, the thing which when lost, you cannot recover (unlike my jacket, which I lost and then found in the folds of couch and throw pillows in the throes of a panic). Staring at the computer screen … day after day … hour after hour … I have to wonder if I’m fryin... Full story

NBA hall-of-famer Gary Payton came to the area Thursday to host a basketball workshop entitled "Rise Above." About 200 boys and girls of all ages had a blast performing basketball drills, playing games, and listening to Payton speak. Payton's message was simple and strong: "Be a pro at being you. ... You have to have a goal in life. ... You can do whatever you want with your life. ... Grow up to be that person that you know you can be," Payton said to a gym full of kids, all wearing "Rise... Growing up in the 1990s, I loved the Seattle Sonics and used to shoot hoops at home in the woods, on a dirt road near a hill. Sometimes I’d miss my shot and the ball would go rolling far down the hill and I’d chase after it. I’d pretend I was making game-winning, buzzer-beating, 3-point shots for the Sonics to win the NBA Championship. My favorite player was Gary Payton. When I got the assignment to cover the recent Gary Payton event, my eyes lit up. I was very nervous, but once I got there I felt fine. So I stood on the sidelines of the gym,... Full story

Author Greg Vandy's "26 Songs in 30 Days" is a fascinating book that explores the folk musician Woody Guthrie's month-long employment by the Bonneville Power Administration in 1941 when Guthrie was assigned to write one song per day while being driven all along the Columbia River. Visiting the sites of dams, most notably the Grand Coulee Dam, Guthrie churned out the songs, which include now legendary folk songs such as "Pastures of Plenty," "Grand Coulee Dam," and "Roll On, Columbia "(Washington... I have a few thoughts on recycling in the area. One thought is that if it’s too expensive then we don’t need every individual household to have its own recycle can, which would necessitate a truck to drive up and down every street picking up the recycling. It would save money to have centralized recycling dumpsters: a dumpster for glass, one for plastic, cardboard, and whatever else. Usually it’s one giant dumpster with the various sections. This way individuals who care about recycling and helping the environment can bring their recyc... Full story
