Author and naturalist David George Gordon gave a presentation on the mythical Sasquatch, aka Bigfoot, to a crowd at the Grand Coulee Library Thursday night. The event was attended by about 40 people, some of whom shared their thoughts on Sasquatch and their experiences of hearing or seeing unexplainable things that may, or may not, have been a Sasquatch. Gordon himself is on the fence about believing in Sasquatch, but would love to find out, encouraging a citizen science approach to the...

A new vibe may find its way to Main Street in Grand Coulee in the form of The Wine Bar. The aptly named establishment will feature wines and food pairings, and the owners are hoping it will become a spot where people come to talk and break bread. The owners are Brad Oliver, Levi and Rachel Seekins, and Jeff Henry. Oliver and Levi Seekins have been friends since 1990, growing up in the area. Seekins and Henry played basketball together for Vanguard University. Henry resides in Paso Robles,...
The current Electric City Municipal Code clearly states its purpose “to protect residential areas from potential adverse impacts as a result of activities which may be deemed commercial in nature.” A new City Ordinance, drafted to allow Short Term Rentals (vacation short stays) in all city residential zones, would change this. Friendly family neighborhoods would be flooded with an influx of non-owner occupied rental homes with revolving renters next to family homes. Short term rental properties are much like motels and there are reasons zon...
Following last week’s rapid-fire vote on a bill to exempt the Legislature from state public records laws, lawmakers are going into damage control with public backlash mounting. The bill, SB 6617, explicitly exempts lawmakers from the state’s Public Records Act, and applies immediately and retroactively — meaning that existing records going back to statehood would be off limits to disclosure requests. The legislation allows disclosure of lawmakers’ calendars and communications with registered lobbyists, but only documents created after July 1,...

"Welcome Home, Champs!" read the banner across Spokane Way as the team returned home. The Grand Coulee Tigers basketball team defeated the Ilwaco Fishermen for the 1960 Class B State Basketball Championship at the Spokane Coliseum, 56-54. New coach that year was Jim Savitz, and team members were Don Kurth, Bob Pachosa, Wayne Snyder, Ken Hoke, Ben Flowers, Ray Rice, Terry Mort, Mark Rauch, Bill Trefry, and Jim Green. "It was fantastic; there wasn't a soul left in town," Rice said recently about...

The Grand Coulee Dam Area Chamber of Commerce held their annual Installation Banquet on Monday at the Melody restaurant, presenting awards to the "Business of the Year" and "Achiever of the Year" for 2017. Lynda Anderson, secretary for the chamber, presented the award for Business of the Year to Jess Ford. "I've been astounded to watch the support that's come out of this year's business of the year. It's been very good for the chamber, and we're glad to have that kind of relationship," Anderson...
With less than two weeks left in the session, state lawmakers introduced a new bill in response to the high school shooting in Parkland, Florida. SB 6620, and its companion in the House, HB 3004, introduced Friday, Feb. 23, would create a mechanism for students to report dangerous behavior and would require the Office of the Superintendent of Public Instruction to allocate grants to school districts to implement emergency response systems. It also raises the age to purchase an assault rifle from 18 to 21. The Parkland shooter was reported to be...
We want to make sure the residents of Electric City are aware that our City Council will be considering a new City Ordinance that would allow short-term rentals (STR) in all residential areas across the City. Short term rentals, sometimes called “vacation rental by owner” (VRBO), allow property owners to rent a residence for a period less than 30 days. If approved, this change would allow property owners to turn the house next door to you into a defacto motel, and in effect turn your residential neighborhoods into business districts. Over six...

The Lake Roosevelt Lady Raiders' basketball season came to a close at the regional tournament in Yakima on Friday, with LR losing to the Mabton Vikings, 49-38. "The Mabton game was two evenly matched teams playing similar styles," said LR Head Coach Wallace Pleasants. Pleasants said that fouls played a big factor in the game, a recurring theme for the Lady Raiders this season. "Even though we are an 'attack the rim' type of team, Mabton had 33 free-throw attempts to our 13," Pleasants said. With...

Northwest author and naturalist David George Gordon will speak about the mythical and iconic Sasquatch, aka Bigfoot, at the Grand Coulee Library on March 8 at 6:30 p.m. in a free, hour-long program. For over 25 years the Seattle author, who has a degree in biology, has written about Sasquatch. His book "The Sasquatch Seeker's Field Manual," explains how "citizen scientists" can gather data in a relevant way to be usable by science, as well as elaborates on the legend of Sasquatch. "I'm...

The Horn family has an interesting family tradition: producing state champions in wrestling. There have been four state champions from the Horn family so far: Jason, Jake, Kodie, and Kaleb, creating a local wrestling dynasty that spans 30 years. Jason Horn, the father of Kodie and Kaleb, became state champion while wrestling at the 148 weight division for Ephrata High School in 1987. Then came Jake Horn, Jason's nephew and Kodie and Kaleb's cousin, also wrestling for Ephrata, who became state...
Colville tribal members have voted 1630-296 in a recent referendum to keep the name “The Confederated Tribes of the Colville Reservation,” a Feb. 8 press release stated. The referendum vote is advisory, meaning the council could still change the name if they so choose. During the past year, the Colville Business Council explored the idea of changing the name of the tribes, which derives from Andrew Colvile, governor of the Hudson Bay Company during the early part of the 19th century, and an Englishman who had never set foot in the local area. ...

The Grand Coulee Dam spilled water over the top last week due to anticipation of spring runoff, combine with minor maintenance being performed on a generator. "We needed to continue to move water downstream to prepare Lake Roosevelt for the spring runoff." Brougher also said that generator 24 was undergoing some minor, unexpected maintenance, and that spillage over the dam...

Grand Coulee's native son, Shane Proctor, who has made a name for himself riding bulls, is leaving the Professional Bull Riders to pursue another long-held goal. Turning 33 in March, Proctor figures it's about time he tries for an all-around cowboy championship title with the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association. Proctor rode Trick Shot in PBR's Madison Square Garden event Feb. 2 for 81 points, and chose that day in New York City to announce his retirement from PBR to focus all his energy on...
Have you carefully checked your utility bills lately? Most people don’t unless they are monsters like the ones for garbage in Scranton, PA, and Los Angeles. In Vancouver, WA, our garbage and recycling bill now has an added 3.6-percent refuse tax. It costs us $1.29 more every two months. However, according to the Wall Street Journal, in Scranton, residents started receiving a $300 annual trash collection fee, which is a 68-percent increase since 2014. In LA, an assisted-living operator’s bill was less than $500 a month, but jumped to a who...

Somebody has to lead the future of American business, and some of those somebodies could be Lake Roosevelt students in the after-school club called Future Business Leaders of America, which is sending four to a state competition. The club, led by staff members Susan Duclos and Stacy Davis, has 10 members, four of whom went to a regional FBLA competition in Wenatchee on Jan. 21 and qualified for the state competition in April in Bellevue, Washington. "The club's mission is to bring business and...

Dave Simms (foreground) and Pat Belt, both of the Waterville area, and Dick Jennings (middle), of Coulee Dam, all chose Crescent Bay as the place to go in order to get out of the house and break their cabin fever Tuesday. Jennings, who had a construction company in the Seattle area, chose Coulee Dam as his retirement spot, moving here about 10 years ago. Jennings said the biggest fish he's caught at Crescent Bay was a 6-pound rainbow trout. All the men were using power-bait marshmallows as bait...
Despite the passage of last year’s bipartisan agreement to fully fund K-12 public education with a property tax hike, the state Legislature is still wrestling over the issue as school leaders across the state say the changes will hurt their districts, including at Grand Coulee Dam. In November, the state Supreme Court ruled that the Legislature needs to ramp up funding for teacher and other school staff salaries to meet its imposed September 2018 deadline, despite the billions that have already been allocated to public education. However, s...
