Three Raider wrestlers took regional championships last weekend, and the team secured enough placers to register eight for the Mat Classic state meet in Tacoma this week.

Lake Roosevelt wrestlers competed in regionals last weekend, producing three regional champs and two third-placers, who all qualify for state, plus three wrestlers placing fourth who will go to state as alternates.

Wrestling in Kittitas on Feb. 10, Kaleb Horn, wrestling in the 132-pound division, won 4-0 against Brock from Tonasket before winning by technical fall, 15-0, against Bretz from Tonasket to secure the championship.

Tony Nichols, wrestling at 152, pinned Alatorre from Tonasket one minute and two seconds into the first round. Nichols then beat Walton from Tonasket 6-3 to become regional champion. “Tony was in control the whole match,” said Raider Head Coach Steve Hood.

At 220, Sherwin Vargas faced off against Ramirez from Mabton.

“It was close going into the third round,” Hood said. “Sherwin got after it, got him turned to his back and pinned him, making [Vargas] the regional champion.”

Robert Thomas, wrestling at 106, won by technical fall, 16-0, against Ambriz from Pateros. Thomas lost to Vanatta from Tonasket, then, facing Ambriz again, pinned him 1:40 into the first round, placing third in the weight division.

Connor Klingenberg, wrestling at 220, lost his match in the sparse division to Ramirez from Mabton late in the third round, but still placed third, qualifying for state.

Moses Luevano went 2-2 in his matchups in the 170 division, losing 12-5 against Guzman from Oroville, defeating Garcia from Liberty Bell 8-5, then Triese from Liberty Bell 7-4, before losing to Garcia from White Swan 7-1. Luevano placed fourth, making him an alternate at state.

Brandon Long, wrestling at 195, was pinned by Partlow from Kittitas but still placed fourth. “He’ll be a senior next year, and will set himself up to be very competitive,” Hood said.

Other Raider regional results are: Everett Schmidt went 0-2 at 113. Ryan Moon went 0-2 and Tyler Palmer 1-2 at 145. Dylan Wiles went 1-2 at 160, and Myka Boyd went 0-2 at 182. Boyd still qualified as fourth in his division, making him an alternate for state.

Ida Sue, wrestling in the girls’ regional tournament in Spokane on Feb. 10, lost her two matches. “Ida had a great season,” Hood said.

The state tournament takes place in Tacoma, beginning Thursday, Feb. 15.
