This Week in History

May 30, 1922, the Lincoln Memorial was dedicated in Washington D.C. Following the assassination of President Lincoln and the eventual end of the Civil War, Congress incorporated the Lincoln Monument Association following the Civil War in 1867. The association was to devise a plan to build a memorial to honor the assassinated President.

Some decades later, a group of planners, sculptures, artists, financiers, politicians and park officials were gathered to design and build the memorial. Ground was broken for the foundation of Lincoln Memorial in 1914. The foundation was completed in May 1915. Work stopped when the United States entered World War 1. Work resumed, and in 1921 roadways and walks were built, along with landscaping of the grounds. The Reflecting Pool was finished a few years later.
