April 27, 1951, the United States and the Government of the Kingdom of Denmark, both parties to the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO), agreed to the Defense of Greenland. The agreement was to promote stability and well-being in the North Atlantic Treaty area by uniting their efforts for collective defense and the preservation of peace and security.
