January 25, 1865, Company E, 5th U.S. Colored Cavalry troops were assigned to drive a herd of cattle from Camp Nelson to Louisville to supply the city with meat. While passing near Simpsonville, men at the rear of the herd were attacked by Confederate guerrillas.
