If you are a Grand Coulee resident and interested in being on the city council, now is your chance.

With the winner of the Council Position #1 race, Ben Hughes, no longer qualified because he is now living outside of Grand Coulee, the city is accepting letters from those interested in filling the position for two years.

After two years, the position will be up for election again, when the winner will finish out the final two years of the position’s typical four-year term.

In the November 2021 election, Hughes received 92 votes to challenger Tracey Wright’s 58.

Wright had not returned a voice mail seeking comment by deadline.

There were also an additional 40 write-in votes.

Ruth Dalton was one such write-in candidate and was even advertised as such leading up to the election.

Grant County Elections Office spokesperson was unable to say how many write-in votes Dalton had received due to her not meeting the qualifications of an official write-in candidate by not registering as such.

They did say that the 2021 election had received the highest number of write-in votes they had seen in comparison to other years.

An interested candidate need only be over the age of 18, a city resident and registered voter of the city.

They would need to submit a letter of interest to the council prior to 5 p.m. on Jan. 17, with the council possibly choosing a candidate at their Jan. 18 meeting.

Letters can be dropped off to the city hall of Grand Coulee at 306 Midway Avenue or mailed to PO Box 180, Grand Coulee, WA 99133.
