Herbert Arthur "Herb" Bird

Herbert Arthur "Herb" Bird (78) passed away with family members by his side at his Grand Coulee, Washington home on Thursday morning, September 9, 2021. Born in Omak, Washington to Harold Caper & Beatrice Jessie Marie Graham-Bird on Friday October 30, 1942, Herbert served with the United States Navy following his high school graduation. Herb's life changed forever on Saturday, March 18, 1967, when he married Miss Donna Louise Hart at the Methodist Church in Coeur d' Lane, Idaho.

He was a "True Mechanic" who loved working on any type of vehicle from motorcycles to family autos to racecars to diesel Semi-Trucks. Herb had worked as a diesel mechanic for the Washington State Department of Transportation and for twenty-two years, he also owned and operated Herb Bird Enterprises carrying scrap metal, hay or anything else that needed to be transported. Herb was so well known, that it was not uncommon for him to receive a call at home from truckers, friends or family members for assistance in the middle of the night with a broken down vehicle. With never a hesitation, Herb would be on his way to help, often with Donna by his side. His big heart was always ready to assist friends and strangers. When not working on engines and drive trains, Herb loved riding motorcycles and being behind the wheel...especially when "the wheel" was attached to a race car, which was speeding around a track. Herb was also involved in working the pits for his loved ones.

All who knew Herb quickly found that he loved to catch one off balance by arguing with you just for the fun of it. Herb also enjoyed hunting and fishing, but his greatest love and source of joy beyond measure, was spending time with his family.

Herbert was predeceased in 2018 by his beloved bride of 51 years: Donna Bird; great granddaughter: Harley Roth; great granddaughter: Clowy Harris; brother: Bob Bird and sister: Myrtle Blevins.

His legacy lives on through his children: Sjana D. Bird ( Pat), Nita M. Bird and Shane A. Bird (Shelley); grandchildren: Lucas Bird, Trista Harris, Anna Mashburn (Aaron), Monica Stoddard, Addy Bird and Drake Bird; great-grandchildren: Maraya Harris, Charlie Harris, Maddy Harris, CheyLynn Baer and Cienna Baer; brothers: Bill Bird and Vernon Bird; sister: Dorothy Gardner as well as numerous nephews and nieces.

His family requests that donations be made in Herb's memory to: Coulee Medical Center / Long Term Care, 411 Fortuyn, Grand Coulee, WA 99133.

The Bird family will have a Celebration of Life on October 9th at 1:00pm starting at the cemetery and then at Spring Canyon.
