There's a lot of honor in giving the gift of a good summer read. 

Lake Roosevelt's National Honor Society, in partnering with the LR Indian Education Program and Coulee Dam Federal Credit Union, who gave major donations towards the cause, purchased a book for every LR student from kindergarten through 12th grade, including Alternative Learning Environment and online-only students.

Nearly 750 books were given away to encourage summer reading. 

"This service project will become an annual project," NHS Advisor Nicole Rasmussen told The Star. "NHS is extremely grateful for our donors being so willing to support our students and encourage their reading habits and advancement. Thank you LR Indian Education and Coulee Dam Federal Credit Union for supporting our students!"

Rasmussen did the fundraising for the project, and the students helped sort and deliver the books to the classes. 

"Next year, and every year after, students will do the fundraising, sorting, and delivering," Rasmussen explained. "This will be ever growing, as I envision that NHS students will spend time in the elementary classes reading and conversing with the students." 

There were 31 NHS members at LR in March of this year.

The books given included:

Kindergarten – "Mango, Abuela, and Me"

1st grade – "The Good Egg"

2nd grade – "Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day"

3rd grade – "Chocolate Fever"

4th grade – "The Lemonade War"

5th grade – "From the Mixed Up Files of Mrs. Basil E. Frankweiler"

6th/7th grade – "Saving Winslow"

8th-12th grade – a book of the student's choice from selection
