Electric City Fire Department still exists

Following the firing of former fire chief Mark Payne last week, the other members of the Electric City Fire Department are still there and plan to stay there.

“As of right now, we’re going to ride it out and see where it goes,” said Assistant Chief Gary Roscoe. “It’s our department, and we don’t want to disband. Most of us are hoping there’s a new mayor and some changes so we aren’t fighting this constantly. As volunteers, it’s hard to volunteer if they’re constantly pushing you out the door.”

“The Mayor and myself will work with the remaining members of the dept. to determine how we will move forward,” City Administrator Russ Powers wrote to The Star in an email. “An appointment as chief will take the approval of the Mayor and the council. There have been no members of the dept resign as of yet.”

A meeting between five officers from the department, Mayor John Nordine, and City Administrator Russ Powers took place Tuesday night.

Roscoe said afterward that the meeting was to let the officers know why Payne was fired (insubordination), let them know how city hall wants certain things run during fire department meetings and to give other guidelines for the department — and to ask if any of them wanted to be fire chief.

Roscoe told The Star that no one said they wanted to be chief, and that they wouldn’t make any decisions until their next fire department meeting on Sept. 25.
