Some people are cat people. Some people are dog people. Others might be pig or goat people.

The Grand Coulee City Council March 19 discussed lifting a ban on hooved animals, such as pigs and goats, within the city limits.

“These miniature goats have become a big deal,” Councilmember Tammara Byers said. “I think some people are interested in them for lawn maintenance and a few other things.”

Pigs are another animal some people like to keep as pets.

“Small pigs,” Byers said, “not the full-sized porker you’re going to slice up and have for dinner.”

Byers said that several Grand Coulee residents have expressed to her an interest in being able to own such animals.

“I’m not against it as long as the same codes apply, nuisance-wise,” Byers said. “Noise, filth, whatever it is; irritating your neighbors with your piglet going off at 2 o’clock in the morning because you didn’t let it in the house and it was 14 degrees below zero.”

“It’s something I’d like you all to consider,” Byers said to the council. “We’ve allowed chickens in the city limits, and I think that’s worked very well for folks. I haven’t had any complaints.”

City Clerk Lorna Pearce said that they did have to tell some people to get rid of roosters that neighbors complained about cock-a-doodle-dooing.

People are currently allowed to have up to six fowl at their residence.

No one on the council seemed opposed to the idea of allowing pigs and goats.
