Raider tennis players had their first week of play, during a week in which the last of four courts were finally cleared of the last of the snow by the Coulee Dam Volunteer Fire Department that Thursday.

Two days before that, using only three of the four courts, the Lake Roosevelt girls won two out of their three games, but the boys lost all three.

The Raiders hosted the Oroville Hornets in Coulee Dam March 19, when the girls' team won 5-0.

"Our girls' team pretty much dominated the young [Oroville] girls' team," Head Coach Steve Archer said.

The boys' team technically lost 5-0. Two of those matches were Raider victories, but are counted as forfeits because the same players played twice, the result of a short number of boy players.

"Morgan George played both first and second singles matches," Archer explained. "He lost the first 8-0, but won against Darian Range, 8-3. Because it was his second match, it was recorded as a team forfeit, but for his league record it's recorded as a win."

The same situation happened with the doubles team of Terry Yazzie and Tucker Keeley who defeated Oroville's Jasper Burnell and Nick Hughes 8-2.

In Pateros on March 21, the girls won 4-1, and the boys lost 3-1.

"The match of the day was Shayla Shilling at second girls' singles," Archer said. "She took her opponent to a deciding third-set tie breaker, which she dominated with a winning score of 7-1."

At home against Omak the next day, the Raider girls lost 3-2, and the boys lost 5-0.

"Our girls' team came within just a few points of taking another win," Archer said. "It would have meant even more, seeing that Omak is an A school."

"Savannah Hobrecht took three sets to take down Lupita Moriel," Archer said. "Tarissa Clark and Raven Clark, at first girls' doubles, handled a strong team of Emma Wilson and Tori Beaver in straight sets, keeping their undefeated string going."

The tennis team was scheduled to play yesterday in Liberty Bell, results of which will be reported in next week's Star.

They are scheduled to play in Entiat Thursday, March 28, with a long break before their next game in Tonasket on April 9.

Their next home game is scheduled for April 11 at 4 p.m. in Coulee Dam against Pateros.
