Karrie Utz accepted an award as "Public School Employee of the Year" for the state of Washington in the Lake Roosevelt gymnasium May 29, chosen out of over 30,000 PSE members in the state.

Utz appeared completely surprised when her name was announced at the mystery assembly as the gym roared with applause.

Utz thanked her family, students, and fellow staff members in an emotional thank-you in front of the student body and staff for Lake Roosevelt Junior/Senior High School.

"This is so overwhelming, thank you," Utz said.

Several members of Utz's family were present at the assembly.

"Phenomenal changes have happened since Karrie's come here," fellow staff member Kim Stanger told the assembled student body. "She believes all of you are important. She is a model for all of us in that way."

School staff member Aaron Derr, Superintendent Paul Turner, and PSE State President Charlotte Shindler also sang praises for Utz.

"If there is one word to describe Karrie, it's 'love'," Shindler said.
