The Lake Roosevelt Raiders suffered their first football loss of the season in a 28-22 nail biter against the Soap Lake Eagles Friday. The Raiders' win-loss record now stands at 5-1 for the season.

The game saw the Eagles take an early lead, but the Raiders stayed in it as the two teams took turns scoring touchdowns. Down by eight points late in the fourth quarter, LR Quarterback Steven Flowers rushed for both a touchdown and the 2-point conversion to tie the game at 22. But then Soap Lake returned the following kickoff for a touchdown to finish the game at 28-22.

"It was a tough loss," said Raider Head Coach Loren Endsley. "The football is an odd-shaped ball, and sometimes it doesn't bounce the way you would hope. We had our opportunities. We capitalized on some of those opportunities and we didn't on some of the others. At the end of the day, we are still right where we want to be in league. If we win out, we are still league champions."

"We stayed together as a team and we fought hard until the final seconds," Endsley continued. "As a coach that is all I can ask for."

It wasn't an easy win for Soap Lake. Endsley noted the Raiders forced them into third-and-long and fourth downs all night, but the Eagles stepped up to the Raider defensive challenge.

"We also stepped up big in the final minutes, making some spectacular plays," Endsley said. "We just ran out of time."

Endsley said the team isn't sulking about their first loss of the season, which occurred on their homecoming night. Instead, he said, "they are using it as motivation."

The Raiders head to Bridgeport this Friday to take on the 0-6 Mustangs at 7 p.m.
