Suspect in custody after Coulee City schools closed

Reported intention was to shoot up the school

The Grant County Sheriff’s Office says schools in Coulee City are closed this morning “as a precaution.”

GCSO adds only that there have been no injuries and that law enforcement officers are at the school.

Reports coming from a person near the school say those officers look “pretty calm” and that the street has not been cordoned off.

The sheriff’s office has not said what the nature of the threat is, only that they “will share more information when we can.”

Possible update:

GCSO is asking the public (at about 9:50 a.m. Wednesday) to avoid highway 28 at Lakeview (between Soap Lake and Ephrata) as the road is blocked for police activity. They did not say the activity in Lakeview is related to the Coulee City schools shutdown.

Update 10 a.m.

GCSO says a suspect is in custody and highway 28 is reopened.

Update:

The Columbia Basin Herald in Moses Lake reports that the suspect had reportedly been heading to Coulee City from Spokane and had stated his intention to reporters to shoot up the school in Coulee City.
