  • Lady Raiders volleyball wins one, loses one

    The Lake Roosevelt Lady Raiders volleyball team beat the Bridgeport Fillies 3-1 at home Sept. 6 in their first match of the season, but lost two nights later at Manson. In Coulee Dam, LR and Bridgeport played closely-matched games, but Lake Roosevelt emerged the victor within four games. One highlight came in the second game as Aiyanna Picard served six aces in a row. The Raiders won that game 25-13. "She just annihilated it," Coach Kasey Garvin said.   • New LR soccer team 1-2 in league play

    The Lake Roosevelt Raiders girls’ soccer team is learning the sport from the ground up. The girls played their first game Sept. 8, losing to formidable Brewster, 11-0. Despite the loss to the Bears, who LR Head Coach Casey Moore says is going to be one of the top teams in the district, Moore is very proud of the way her team played. “They didn’t give up the whole game, despite being down by so much,” she said. “They pushed themselves very hard.” The Raiders played with only 12 players on the team that game, including one with a minor injur... Full story

    The Lake Roosevelt Lady Raiders volleyball team beat the Bridgeport Mustangs 3 games to 1 at home on Tuesday in their first match of the season.     Lake Roosevelt Raider Football players continued to be students of the game as NFL punter T.J. Conley and EWU Big Sky champion offensive lineman Cassidy Curtis came to their practice last Wednesday. The guests spoke to the Raiders before their practice. The players listened intently to their advice before heading to the field, where Conley and Curtis ran drills with the younger players, guiding them on the proper techniques of how to kick a football, or be more effective as a lineman.     The Lake Roosevelt Raiders opened their season with a victory against Waterville, defeating the Shockers on their home field 41-7. “Overall it was a successful night,” Raider Head Coach Loren Endsley said. “We had a lot of players step up and make some huge plays for us.   • Raiders show good signs in pre-season football jamboree

    The Raider football team showed a lot of promise on Saturday when they played Bridgeport in a pre-season “jamboree.” The Raiders scored three touchdowns, while only allowing one during the series of short scrimmages against Manson and Bridgeport. Sophomore quarterback Steven Flowers threw a touchdown pass to senior wide receiver Nathaniel Hall. Junior running back Beau Michel ran in a touchdown.   • Former NFL player helps at Raider football practice

    Former NFL tight end Nate Overbay spent some time with the Lake Roosevelt Raiders football team on Monday to talk to them about his knowledge of the sport as well as to participate in their practice.   • Twelve teams to play in softball tournament

    The annual summer softball tournament, now named The Kenny Hearne Summer Classic, will be held from Thursday through Saturday, August 4 – 6, on the North Dam Park upper and lower fields. Twelve teams are signed up to play. On both Thursday and Friday, two games will be played simultaneously on the upper and lower fields at 6 p.m., and two more games at 7:15 p.m. Games are scheduled to start at 9 a.m. on Saturday.     A local baseball player is on the team headed from the Pacific Northwest to the Babe Ruth World Series this month. Dalton Kentner, playing for the Columbia Basin Riverdogs in the 15-and-under bracket, will head to the big Babe Ruth League ultimate competition in Williston, North Dakota Aug. 13-20.   • Football coach's resignation accepted

    The school board accepted the resignation of Geary Oliver as head football coach at Lake Roosevelt High School at its meeting Monday night. The district has stated that it was exercising its long-established practice of awarding head coaching positions to sitting teachers, if they are qualified for the job. Advertisements for candidates to fill the position will soon be underway, and it is expected that Loren Endsley, Lake Roosevelt’s physical education teacher who acted as Oliver’s assistant last year, will apply.     The status of Lake Roosevelt High School’s varsity football coaching position was clouded last week when Geary Oliver resigned as head coach under unusual circumstances. Oliver had already been issued his contract for this fall, but was asked to resign because the district had indicated it wanted to go in a “different direction.” The football coaching position was the subject of a closed session of the school board on July 11, and in spite of the fact his contract had already been approved, the board left it up to Athletic Director Richard Blac... Full story

  • Golf tourney coming

    The Coyote Golf Tournament kicks off with a practice round this Friday at Banks Lake Golf Course. Those interested can get registered and pay the $135 fee. This includes all green fees for the two days, a dinner on Saturday and a luncheon on Sunday. The actual golf play kicks off Saturday, July 9, at 8 a.m. then resumes Sunday at 9 a.m. On Saturday, golfers steaks will be waiting for golfers after they play 18 holes.     Nathan Morrell represented the Lake Roosevelt Raiders at the WIAA State 1B, 2B, 1A Track Meet at Eastern Washington University Saturday. Morrell threw the discus in the first flight, which included all the other District 5-6 competitors from the week before. The weather on May 28 was cool with a intermittent wind. Morrell’s first throw was from the standing position. He fell away on release and the throw went out of bounds.     Nathan Morrell has qualified to compete in the 2016 State Track & Field Championships at Eastern Washington University this Saturday. The Lake Roosevelt discus thrower was the only Raider who qualified out of the five that had an opportunity to move on at the district competition in Ephrata Saturday. Morrell placed fourth in the discus with a throw of 103 feet, 6 inches.
