    Adults 21 years old and older who need to earn a high school diploma have that opportunity in the Grand Coulee Dam area this fall. The emphasis for the course offering through Big Bend Community College is preparation of a portfolio of evidence to support current high school graduation requirements. Transcripts, knowledge gained from life experiences, previous and current employment, specialized certifications, volunteer history, and any combination thereof, may be incorporated into a plan to fulfill the requirements.   • District contracts for nursing at school

    The Grand Coulee Dam School District is contracting with Coulee Medical Center to provide supervisory nursing services for the new school complex in Coulee Dam. The school board approved a measure that will provide two days of on-site registered nurse care at the schools, and also provide consultation when needed. The school also has two practical nurses who provide care, one at each school, five days a week. The agreement calls for CMC to bill the school district for up to 640 hours of supervisory nursing coverage at $30 an hour during the... Full story

The board accepted the resignation of Sarah Wapato as paraprofessional of student health. The board also approved eight hires for the coming school year.   • Raider sculpture dedication set

    The new Raider sculpture at the new educational complex in Coulee Dam will be officially dedicated at 10 a.m. Tuesday, Sept. 8, the opening day of school. The 7-foot-tall metal sculpture has been at the front of the Lake Roosevelt Schools complex for a couple of months, as if to welcome all those who enter the grounds.     Grand Coulee Dam School District students will have a “welcome back Raiders night” Thursday, Aug. 27, from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. The evening will allow elementary students to find out who their teacher is and get acquainted with their rooms. On the 7th-12th-grade side, students will be able to choose their lockers, pick up their class schedules and purchase ASB cards.     Grand Coulee Dam School District Superintendent Dennis Carlson Monday night outlined changes in the use of some spaces at the gym site on the Lake Roosevelt High School campus. Carlson told the board that the plan is to remove a wall in the old art room and then use the space s a weight room. That would turn the existing weight room into a space for Lee Largent and his special math classes. Work would include some interior door work for security reasons.     Lake Roosevelt Junior/Senior High School principal Brandon Byers has resigned. The Grand Coulee Dam School District board of directors accepted Byers’ resignation at a special meeting Monday night. Byers said Tuesday that he has accepted a position as assistant principal at Frontier Middle School in Moses Lake. Byers graduated from Moses Lake High School in 2002 and has several family members there.     The Banks Lake Bass Club Monday awarded Jazmine Sumner, graduating senior from Lake Roosevelt High School, a $500 Scholarship. Sumner resides in Grand Coulee and plans on attending Spokane Community College to study medical sonography.
