    Lake Roosevelt Raiders will be holding a welcome back night Kindergarten through 12th grade Wednesday, August 31, from 5 to 7 p.m. Elementary students will be able to find out who their teacher is; 7th – 12th students will be able to choose their lockers, pick up their class schedules and purchase ASB cards.     The Grand Coulee Dam School District board hired personnel to cover six vacant positions at a special meeting Monday. The special meeting also was a training session for members of the board. Hired were Alissa Mansker, as a second grade teacher; Misty Krohn, a kindergarten teacher; Tera Remington, a reading specialist; Cole Seaver, junior high science teacher and LRHS assistant JV football coach; and Barbara Mooney, 21st Century community learning center site coordinator.... Full story

  • Kids learn quilting in collaborative summer program

    Local business and community organizations helped with a SHARP Kids summer program, resulting in a fundraiser and in learning about quilting. KISSed Quilts, Eagles Auxiliary, and members from the Coulee Creators all collaborated with fabric and hands-on assistance with learning how to sew during the SHARP Kids summer program for girls in fifth through eighth grades, under the direction of group leader Susan Duclos.     Anyone who ever went to, or worked at, Grand Coulee Schools is invited to an “All School Reunion” Friday and Saturday, August 12-13. At 7 p.m. Friday, alumni will get together at North Dam Park for visiting and for renewing old friendships, bringing their own drinks, snacks, and chairs. On Saturday at 9 a.m., the old high school gym will be open, and at 10 a.m., the new high school will be open for tours.     The Grand Coulee Dam School District hired a dean of students and a new athletic director at Monday night’s board meeting. Dean of students at Lake Roosevelt High School for the next school term will be Charles Pierce, from Soap Lake. Pierce will be in his final year for his principal certification at Whitworth College during the 2016-17 term.   • New art will greet students in fall at Lake Roosevelt

    When students return to school this fall they will see six huge abstract paintings hanging in their school. The paintings, by Portland artist Lucinda Parker, feature two birds or fish in an abstract setting, with sayings painted on the frames. It will be a lesson, of sorts, to not only enjoy the painting but to understand and develop the meaning of the paintings.   • District approves ESD contract

    The Grand Coulee Dam School District will pay more than $400,000 a year for services ranging from information technology management to bookkeeping under a contract approved in June. The disctrict board approved a $406,618 service agreement with the North Central ESD (Education Service District) for the 2016-17 school year at its June 27 meeting. The major services contracted for include network services, $106,657; and business management, $73,250.   • Science teacher hired

    The Grand Coulee Dam School District board hired a secondary science teacher Monday to replace veteran Ralph Rise. Hired was Mark Vinciguerra, 46, who taught this past school year in the Hoquiam School District. He holds a bachelor of arts degree from Pacific Lutheran University. Vinciguerra also has taught science in the Olympia School District.     Five of six administration positions in the Grand Coulee Dam school system will change for the new school year. Superintendent Dr. Dennis Carlson concludes his six years here June 30, and is being replaced by Paul Turner. Turner was hired by the board to follow Carlson this spring, after it was learned Carlson planned to retire.   • Six abstract paintings go up at LR

    Lucinda Parker, an abstract artist from Portland, Oregon, was here June 21 as six of her paintings were hung at various places in the Lake Roosevelt school building. Two of the 5-foot by 9-foot paintings went up in each cafeteria, and one in each of the main stairwells.   • Olson awarded scholarship

    The P.E.O. awarded a $2,500 STAR Scholarship for the 2016-2017 academic year to Andrea Olson, a senior at Almira/Coulee- Hartline High School. The STAR Scholarship was awarded to 400 high school seniors from a pool of 1,933 applicants nationwide. Olson is the daughter of Robert and Amber Olson and was recommended for the scholarship by Chapter DG of Coulee Dam.     The Grand Coulee Alumni Association May 18 finalized plans for an all-school reunion and awarded more than double the number of scholarships they have in recent years.     OLYMPIA, Wash. — Higher education officials Monday announced two new agreements aimed at giving future community and technical college transfer students a jump start on bachelor’s degrees in computer science or music. The new “major related programs” are specialized versions of Washington’s decades-long direct transfer agreement, which allows students to finish the first two years of their bachelor’s degrees at a community or technical college and then transfer as juniors.     The Grand Coulee Dam School District received a clean audit for its financial statements and for federal grant compliance for 2015, according to a preliminary report that was shared with the school board last Tuesday night. The audit from the Washington State Auditor’s office cost the district an estimated $9,500. The report stated that the next audit will be in 2017, and cover accountability for public resources, financial statements and federal programs.     Jake Marshall Adkins, 2006 Lake Roosevelt High School graduate, has received his Doctor of Medicine degree from Virginia Commonwealth University. He completed undergraduate work at Washington State University in 2010 (B.S. Chemical Engineering) and graduate studies at Arizona State University in 2012 (M.S. Chemical Engineering). He graduated from the School of Medicine with honors and will practice Diagnostic Radiology.   • Senior and music trips OK'd

    A trip by the senior class at Lake Roosevelt High School to San Francisco was approved the the school board May 23. The trip had been outlined to the board earlier, but approval was held up pending completion of paperwork. The board learned that 25 seniors have signed up for the trip and will take off for California on Sunday, May 29, along with five adults who will be accompanying this year’s senior class.     The Raider tennis doubles team of Jordan Charles and John Drapela traveled to Omak last weekend to try to make it to the state tournament, falling short of that goal by one match. In the first match of the day, Charles and Drapela faced the district tournament’s top seed from Chelan. They tried hard but fell short by the match scores of 6-3, 6-3.
