  • City OKs carts and ATVs on roads

    Motorists will soon have to look out for the “little guys” in Electric City. The city council voted to move ahead to allow all-terrain vehicles and golf carts to move about the city streets, legally. It was too bad for motorized scooters, they will have to wait their turn. The council decided to delay making a decision on the motorized scooters until it sees how the others are working out.     Grand Coulee will have a new mayor, and a number of former council members from at least two cities have filed to return to municipal government, according to election filings posted by county auditors Friday. Grand Coulee Mayor Chris Christopherson decided not to run again for his office, but Mayor Pro Tem Paul Townsend filed for the four-year mayor’s term.     Parlette named “Friend of Children” State Sen. Linda Evans Parlette was awarded the “Friend of Children” award, based in part on her role in securing funding to build the new Lake Roosevelt School. The North Central Educational Service District bestowed the honor on Parlette last Thursday in Wenatchee.   • Nespelem man dies in accident

    A 40-year-old Nespelem man died early Sunday when he was struck by a car in Omak. Edward E. Hanway was struck on State Route 97 at the north end of Omak about 1:30 a.m., the Washington State Patrol reported. He was taken to Mid-Valley Hospital, where he was pronounced dead. He was hit by a 2006 Chrysler 300, driven by a 28-year-old Okanogan woman, Brianna Marie Kelley, who was not injured. The car was towed.   • Bull ride this Saturday

    There’s some big bucks to be made Saturday, May 23. All you have to do is ride a few bulls. It’s the Third Annual Cleatis Lacy Memorial Bull Ride at the Ridge Rider rodeo grounds in Delano. Action begins at 3 p.m. This year, rodeo officials have added $3,000 to the prize money making the bull riding event attractive to some pretty good professional cowboys. The event is named after Grand Coulee’s own Cleatis Lacy, a rodeo cowboy of the first degree.   • City council hears tourism requests

    The chamber of commerce and Ridge Riders Saddle Club each made a pitch for more hotel/motel tax money at the Electric City council meeting last Tuesday night. Grand Coulee Dam Area Chamber of Commerce Executive Director Peggy Nevsimal had earlier asked for another $10,000, just to match what the chamber was given by the city for 2014 operations. She asked for the $10,000 again Tuesday and pointed out that it was urgent that the city act on the request so marketing issues for the remainder of 2015 could be addressed.   • License sought for marijuana store

    A Grand Coulee business couple has asked the city council to grant them a business license for a marijuana retail store near Coulee Medical Center. Jean Comstock and Jim Pachosa appeared before the council last Tuesday night and requested support in getting the business license in the city. Comstock has one of the Grant County state permits created by the passage of Initiative 502, which legalized recreational marijuana, and is seeking an OK from the city council.   • School-clinic partnership will aim for better care

    Kids at Lake Roosevelt Schools will have more direct access to health care if a plan to that end pans out between Coulee Medical Center and Lake Roosevelt Schools.     A spaghetti dinner set for Saturday will help fund a project that brings together sixth graders from Coulee Dam and Nespelem schools to pave their way as eventual classmates in high school. The Grand Coulee Dam Rotary Club chose to work with the sixth graders for the annual fund raiser, possibly instilling an early lesson in community service.     Self confidence, even in dogs, has a lot to do with how well they perform. Take the case of "Crystal," an 11-year-old Sheltie, owned by Janice Elvidge of Elmer City. Elvidge had given up on Crystal after the registered Sheltie injured nerves in her shoulder during a training exercise. That had made Crystal afraid of certain obstacles in her agility training routine, Elvidge explained.   • Assaulted man taken to hospital

    A severely beaten man who had been attacked by several people giving him a ride out of Nespelem was taken to the hospital here Sunday. Victor Conrad, 47, was found in a Main Street apartment after police officers here were led to the site by dispatch. Officers Dan Holland and Chris McClanahan arrived at the Main Street apartment and found Conrad, who was having trouble breathing, and called for an ambulance.     Equipment is surplus Several video cameras and accessories have been declared surplus by the city of Grand Coulee, along with some Dell computer equipment, minus the hard drives, which will be stored in the city’s safe. Fire and EMS activity reported Grand Coulee’s Volunteer Fire Department answered four calls in March, including one structure fire. The department had 34 ambulance calls during the same period, including 12 transports. In April, the department didn’t have any fire calls, but was called for a fuel spill and one rescue.     All the incumbents running in the Colville Tribes’ primary election last week made it into the general election June 13. Only one incumbent received fewer votes than the person challenging him. When the votes were all in, Allen Hammond, incumbent in the Inchelium Position 2 race who got 108 votes, was surpassed by challenger Elizabeth L. “Susie” Allen, who received 138 votes.   • Motorcyclist takes spill

    Ronald McDonald, a Camas Street resident, took a spill Sunday when he tried to stop his motorcycle near the Galaxy Smoke Shack on SR 155 near the bridge in Coulee Dam. He said he was unfamiliar with the hydraulic brakes on his cycle. McDonald complained of an injured wrist and was taken by ambulance to Coulee Medical Center. McDonald had a motorcycle permit and told officers he was taking oxygen from a container because he had emphysema. Police directed traffic while the roadway was cleared. ... Full story

  • Two fires burn buildings

    A fire early Monday morning destroyed a storage shed that was used as a wash house for several nearby trailers on Stagecoach Lane in Lincoln County. The shed was about 20 feet by 15 feet and only the sidewalls were standing when the blaze was extinguished. Grand Coulee Volunteer Fire Chief Richard Paris said 24 people, including ambulance personnel, showed up for the 2:45 a.m. call. Paris said firefighters from Grand Coulee, the Bureau of Reclamation, Coulee Dam and Okanogan County Fire District 2 showed up to assist in fighting the blaze.... Full story

  • Man indicted for theft from USBR

    An Electric City man has been indicted in the United States District Court, Eastern District of Washington, on four counts of theft of government property while an employee of the Bureau of Reclamation. Charged was James M. Barry, who has not been detained and has agreed to a deferred prosecution plan. Barry declined to comment. Barry is charged with taking valuable metal parts from the government’s inventory and selling them to a Spokane recycling firm.     All incumbents made it into the general election in the Colville Tribes’ primary poll vote held last Saturday. Now they will have to wait until absentee ballots are counted on Thursday to see if the numbers hold up for them. In Nespelem’s District Position 1 race, incumbent Ricky Gabriel received the highest number of votes with 60, followed by former councilman Brian Nissen with 56; Harvey Moses, Jr., with 38; Deb Louie with 34; Jon Batten with 29; and Marietta “Etta” Grunlose with 24.     The Colorama rodeo queen's future probably won't take her very far from animals. Emma Gunderson, a junior at Ephrata High School, would like to become a veterinarian's assistant after she graduates from high school. Her love of animals has always been a draw towards that goal, she said this week.   • Puts on new chevrons in Grand Coulee

    Gary Moore was named sergeant by Grand Coulee Police Chief John Tufts, beginning May 1. Moore has been in the department since 2003 and prior to that was a reserve police officer in Reardan. Moore,and his wife Lisa, are residents of Electric City.     Terry Reister speaks quite softly, but the guitars he makes sing out loud. Reister and his son, Terry Reister Jr, showed off the elder's products at the Grand Coulee Dam Area Chamber of Commerce luncheon at The Melody last Thursday. The owner of Sandy's Grocery store in Wilbur started making guitars about 20 years ago, but now it's getting a little more serious.
