    Income tax time is here! Free tax preparation is being offered at the Grand Coulee Senior Center again this year. Volunteers trained in cooperation with IRS and AARP will be available every Tuesday, thru April 8, from 9 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Some volunteers have been certified to assist taxpayers with health savings accounts. This service is available to anyone with low or middle income. You do not have to be seniors or members of the senior center to take advantage of this free help.   • Pruning deciduous shrubs

    This is the time of year to prune your shrubs that will bloom on this season’s growth. Generally these are shrubs which bloom after June. Some of these shrubs common in our landscapes are the Butterfly Bush, Spirea, Beauty Bush, and Snowberry. The spring blooming shrubs bloom on last season’s growth. Minor corrective pruning can be done now. This can include removing dead wood and broken branches, branches that lay on the ground and suckers at the base of the shrub.     Grand Coulee Police 3/5 - An Electric City man living on Goodfellow Street reported to police that someone had stolen a TV set from his porch. He told police he had received the 32-inch set in the mail and it had been placed on his porch.   • Senior Center will only accept aluminum cans

    The seniors accept aluminum cans ONLY. Please do not put cardboard, plastic bottles or other aluminum in the collection sacks. In 2013, the Seniors collected 3800 pounds (almost 2 tons) of cans and took in approximately $1500 for the Senior Center. That is approximately 30 cans for everyone in the Grand Coulee Dam area. The program helps keep the doors open at the seniors and keeps the cans out of the landfills. Please do not put other material in with the cans because we have to dispose of it and that raises the already high garbage bill and... Full story

    Grand Coulee Police 3/4 - Police stopped a vehicle when the officer noticed that a female passenger wasn’t wearing her seatbelt. She was taken to Grant County Jail after the officer learned of a warrant for her arrest. - A woman living on Stevens Avenue in Electric City reported that someone had slashed her tire.     Grand Coulee Police 2/18 - The owner of the Variety Store told police that a former employee had told another that if his wife was fired from the firm, he would harm the owner. Police told the owner to notify the former employee that he was not welcome in the store, and if he did come back to call police. 2/24 - An officer went to milepost 20 on SR-155 to check on a vehicle that had slid off the roadway.     OLYMPIA--While the budgets the House and Senate Democrats proposed this week were nearly identical, Senate Republicans believe the debate over education funding is a battle best fought next year. The McCleary v. Washington decision in 2012 ruled that the state was not sufficiently funding basic education. According to education officials and lawmakers, the state needs to invest more than $5 billion into education by 2018.     Grand Coulee Police 2/17 - A woman complained of two dogs, one black and one brown, that charged her, barking. The incident occurred near Park and Lincoln Streets in Electric City. An officer couldn’t find the two dogs. 2/18 - Police responded to a reported drug overdose on Kelso Avenue in Electric City. A woman stated she had taken a number of pills.
