  • Larson to speak at Zion Lutheran Church March 12

    Allen Larson, originally from Marlin, Wash., will speak at Zion Lutheran Church on Tuesday, March 12. A Mayan Dinner will be served at 6 p.m., followed by Larson’s talk about his work supporting Bible translation of indigenous languages of Guatemala for 16 years and other places around the world.     Income tax time is here! Free tax preparation is being offered at the Grand Coulee Senior Center again this year. Volunteers trained in cooperation with IRS and AARP will be available every Tuesday, Feb 12 - April 9 from 9:00 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. This service is available to anyone with low or middle income. You do not have to be seniors or members of the senior center to take advantage of this free help. However, special attention is given to those 60 or older. Free e-filing is also available.     Grand Coulee Police 2/19 - An officer checked on a reported traffic hazard near milepost 24 in Electric City and found a trailer disconnected from its tractor and blocking the roadway. After the trailer was connected the roadway was opened up for traffic. - Police were asked to stand by at a report of domestic violence on W.     Charles Gurney, a Civil War veteran, opened his first seedhouse in 1866 (Victory Horticultural Library, www.saveseeds@victoryseeds.com). Forty years later, Charles, his seven sons, and a nephew incorporated as Gurney Seed and Nursery Company. I started reading the “Gurney Catalog” from cover to cover in 1969. Not counting a failed attempt to start carnations from seed, that was the year I started gardening. Early on, I didn’t buy seeds from catalogs, but the Gurney Catalog had other uses.     Grand Coulee Police 2/12 - An official with the Head Start program at Center School told police that someone had taken the lock off a storage shed where games and toys are stored. Nothing was taken, the report stated. It was thought that the entry was at the same time as a number of metal items was taken from a fenced-in area near the kitchen. - USBR Plant Protection asked police to check on a vehicle on Bureau of Reclamation property near the fish pens in Electric City.     Jim and Debbie Van Geystel, are excited to announce the engagement of their daughter, Amanda Van Geystel, to Josh Jorgenson, son of Mr. and Mrs. Roger Jorgenson of Orting, Wash. Both are graduates of Eastern Washington University. Josh earned his degree in economics and finance and is employed at American West Bank. Amanda graduated with her degree in education and is currently substitute teaching in multiple school districts. A July wedding is being planned in Spokane, Wash.... Full story

    Grand Coulee Police 2/4 - A man on Wenatchee Ave. NE, reported a suspicious vehicle by his residence and told police that when he went outside to see what they wanted, they drove away. Police checked the area for the vehicle but couldn’t find it. 2/5 - A man leaving Safeway with his bags of groceries was allegedly punched in the nose by his previous girlfriend’s new boyfriend.     A meeting of the Coulee Pioneer Museum is scheduled for 1 p.m., Wednesday, Feb. 13, at the art room above the Senior Center. Those interested in establishing a museum in the area are asked to attend.     Grand Coulee Police 1/29 - An Electric City man living on W. Grand Avenue had a refrigerator outside his house and the city was concerned that it might attract kids. When inspected, the homeowner had the refrigerator secured so you couldn’t get into it. The refrigerator was moved to a storage shed. - Police were advised that a renter at a residence on Division had reported to the homeowner that a shop door on the property had been kicked in.     Rotarian and Electric City resident Rob Hughes will travel to Guatemala with a group of Rotary volunteers from across North America to bring educational opportunities to impoverished children. The Guatemala Literacy Project (GLP) group will deliver first-ever textbooks and inaugurate brand-new computer centers in rural schools. In 14 years of existence, the GLP has established 184 textbook programs, 52 computer centers, 27 primary schools with the Culture of Reading program and 578 one-year scholarships.
