    First, let’s do a recap of temperatures and precipitation for July. I recorded four days with a high in excess of 100°F. July 2, 3, 4, and 31 were all above 100°F. The high for the month was on the 3rd at 104.1°F. Our low of the month was on the 26th at 52.3°F. My data shows that just about half the month of July was 90°F or above. The home weather station recorded a mean of 78.1°F which was 5.1° above the all-time mean for the month, at 73.0°F. No records broken for July, as the all-time high was in 1939 at 113°F.     Shoulder work to delay traffic Drivers should expect delays of less than 10 minutes starting yesterday morning, Tuesday, Aug. 4, on SR 174 toward Bridgeport as road crews work on the shoulders, the DOT said late Monday. From the Four Corners junction with SR 155, a Department of Transportation spokesman said, a crew will be reshaping and paving shoulders for eight miles west. Flaggers will be directing traffic.     Two injured in highway accident The Washington State Patrol reported a two-car accident with injuries Saturday about one mile north of Coulee City. A car driven by Janet Pate of Coulee City was struck by a vehicle driven by Richard Wood of Moses Lake. Wood and a passenger, Janet Wood, were taken to Coulee Medical Center, as was Pate. Both vehicles were totaled. Wood was charged with driving too fast for conditions, which was listed as a cause along with inattention.     Grand Coulee Police 7/13 - Someone threw a rock through the window at Jack’s Spring Canyon Service but got away with only about $20 worth of items. The thief scattered Cheetos onto the parking lot. The window will cost about $100 to replace. It was reported that the store might have the thief on its security tape. - A person who walks regularly along Martin Road said he saw several batteries just out of view stashed along the road.     Busy fire fighters The Grand Coulee Volunteer Fire Department answered five calls during June, reported fire Chief Rick Paris at the city council meeting last Tuesday night. One call was a structure fire and another an outside fire. Three mutual aid calls were made. Paris reported 37 ambulance calls, nine in the Coulee Dam area, 21 in the Grand Coulee area and seven transportation calls.     Though our mean temperature was a bit higher for May, the month was on the normal side. We recorded a high for the month of 89.5°F and a low of 36.5°F (all-time high was 100°F in 1986 and the all-time low was 21°F in 2002). The mean was higher than the all-time mean for May (58.4°F) at 62.5°F or 4.1°F higher. May was above normal, slightly, for precipitation.     1 years ago The Grand Coulee Dam Middle School fifth-grade “Math Is Cool” team finished fifth place at the regional spring competition in Moses Lake, competing in division two against 45 other teams, representing 39 schools from around Washington State.     Last week, the National Park Service launched a new public relations campaign aimed raising public awareness of the treasures it keeps available for all. The campaign urges folks to “Find Your Park” and is premised on the idea that many people don’t know about relatively local parks managed for their benefit by NPS.     The National Park Service is in the process of preparing a “foundation document” for planning and management of the Lake Roosevelt National Recreation Area. A foundation document, the NPS says, reaffirms a National Park unit’s core mission and significance, most important resources and values, and the interpretive themes that tell the park’s important stories.     North Dam “Clean and Fix Day” this weekend Citizen volunteer hours this weekend can go a long way toward helping keep North Dam Park a viable community asset. This column could have easily been called “Past Gems in the Coulee” or “Where are these Gems now” but this man is much more than a part of our past around here. Gary Kuiper is still as relevant today as he was years ago.     Fire district passes audit Okanogan County Fire District 2 passed state audit for the two-year period from Jan. 1, 2012 through Dec. 31, 2013, the Washington State Auditor’s Office said Monday.     National Park Service officials at Coulee Dam presented their proposal last week to boost boat launch and camping fees for Lake Roosevelt. One of their main concerns, said Lake Roosevelt National Recreation Area Superintendent Dan Foster, is that the current fee structure doesn't comply with the law against undercutting local business rates.     Grand Coulee Police 8/25 - Police received a call from dispatch that there was a car prowl going on in the 1st Street area. A woman told the officer that a man had the hood up of a car and was looking inside. A check on the car showed that the battery was missing. Police went to a location in the Delano area where there was a similar car and found a man who said he was the one looking under the hood and he was just trying to determine how a part fit together.   • Explosives found on local shores near Grand Coulee

    Plastic explosives from a mining operation in Canada have been showing up in Lake Roosevelt with some degree of regularity, the most recent near Crescent Bay. A tube of the explosives, about a foot long and several inches wide, was detonated at Crescent Bay by the Spokane Bomb Squad on July 31. The Grand Coulee Volunteer Fire Department was on standby during the detonation. One local resident, who saw the detonation, said it made a pretty big bang.     1 Years Ago Detective Don Redfield of the Colville Tribal Police stated that no charges will be filed against the 9-year-old child, who apparently started the 1900 acre fire that threatened homes on the hillside of highway 155 near Elmer City on July 29th. The child was playing with a lighter and setting small dolls on fire when the fire erupted.     Rotarians have connected with the Safe Kids program at both Crescent Bay and Spring Canyon boat launches in an effort to save lives in area waters. The program is sponsored by Grant County Health District, the Grand Coulee Dam Rotary Club and the National Park Service. The program provides life jackets at the two boat launches for people who plan water activity but don't have enough life jackets.
