    The school board has set four main goals as the Grand Coulee Dam School District heads into the new school year. Superintendent Paul Turner and members of the board met in a long evening retreat to discuss school affairs and to set some specific goals a few weeks ago.     It was like grill heaven Sunday at North Dam Park. Seventeen grills were cooking and grill masters turned out from Idaho, Oregon and throughout Washington, going after prize money and having fun at the same time. Many of the top 10 competitors in the Northwest competed. It was the final event of a two-day Harvest Festival, in its fifth running. Vying for the big bucks, a Tacoma, Washington griller, Pitbull BBQ, picked up the top prize of $2,000 and the grand champion award.     This would be a good weekend to stay in the Coulee and take advantage of the many facets of the fifth annual Harvest Festival. Gather the kids, the grandkids, and be at North Dam Park for a celebration designed for all ages. The Grand Coulee Dam Area Chamber of Commerce has put together a host of events within the Harvest Festival so that all ages can have fun. The event will run Saturday and Sunday, September 17-18. Join the third annual Run the Dam crowd, at 9 a.m., Saturday, Sept. 17, and take part in one of the scheduled distance runs - 5K, 10K, or half marathon.     Candidates forum set for Coulee Dam Okanogan County voters can hear their candidates for county commission seats address the issues at a special forum in October in Coulee Dam being arranged by the Grand Coulee Dam Area Chamber of Commerce.     The Regional Board of Mayors heard Monday of plans for public meetings to further explore the idea of consolidating local towns. Presenting for the chamber of commerce’s Economic Development Council was Bob Valen, a member of the group.     Fire mostly out In its final day of reporting on the Cayuse Mountain fire, the Spokane Indian Tribe stated the fire was 95 percent contained and had burned 14 houses and nine other structures. The fire consumed grass and trees on 18,116 acres. The fire started Aug. 21. Level 1 and 2 evacuations were still in place.     It’s harvest time and almost time for a festival. The Grand Coulee Dam Area Chamber of Commerce’s Harvest Festival is scheduled for Sept. 17-18, and features a number of special events. New to the festival this year, the Run the Dam event offers 5K-, 10K- and half-marathon runs on Saturday, Sept. 17.     The chamber of commerce’s Economic Development Council finally got a hearing about its community consolidation survey in front of Electric City’s council, but it wasn’t easy. The EDC group attended the Aug. 9 council meeting and requested to present to the council the results of the survey that asked whether people would be in favor of consolidating two or more local towns. The group was initially turned down until Councilmember Richard McGuire asked that it be put to a vote. It passed 3-2, with councilmembers McGuire, Birdie Hensley and Lonna... Full story

  • Survey shows widespread support to combine cities

    The chamber of commerce's Economic Development Council (EDC) received an unusually strong response to a consolidation survey mailed to 2,235 residents and placed online in June. Some 546 residents responded, a 24.4-percent return. Such surveys need only generate about a 6-percent response to be considered statistically valid, information garnered by the chamber states. The subject, consolidation of local towns and cities, is not unfamiliar to residents who have been around here awhile.... Full story

    Electric City’s fish pen operation is great for fishing in Banks Lake, but it also benefits the area in a different way. A good fishery in Banks Lake adds greatly to the area economy. Currently, the volunteer group that raises some 300,000 rainbow trout annually is looking for a new manager of the fish net pen operation.
