Ruth Moses Wapato, 80,passed on Tuesday, Oct. 14, 2014, in Holy Family Hospital, one day short of her 81st birthday. Ruth was born in Nespelem, Wash., on the Colville Indian Reservation. Ruth was proud of her heritage as a descendant of the Joseph Band Nez Perce, and frequently showed the grit of the those who had survived the War of 1877. The seniors accept aluminum cans ONLY. Please do not put cardboard, plastic bottles or other aluminum in the collection sacks. In 2013, the Seniors collected 3800 pounds (almost 2 tons) of cans and took in approximately $1500 for the Senior Center. That is approximately 30 cans for everyone in the Grand Coulee Dam area. The program helps keep the doors open at the seniors and keeps the cans out of the landfills. Grand Coulee 10/13 - Two semi trucks had pulled into Station One on top of Grand Coulee Dam and USBR Plant Protection asked officers to come in case they needed to stop traffic. The two trucks were able to turn around and didn’t need assistance from police. - Plant Protection advised that there had been a theft of rocks from government property. An 82-year-old man said he took a rock because he didn’t know it was wrong. 1 Years Ago After seven months in Iraq, Lance Cpl. Johnny Holt returned stateside, much to the joy of his friends and family. Holt is a 1999 Lake Roosevelt High School graduate who volunteered to go to Iraq as an administration clerk with the 7th Marine Regiment. Grand Coulee Police 10/6 - An officer in pursuit of a vehicle that failed to stop at an intersection reported that his patrol car struck a small animal, thought to be a cat. Later, after dealing with the stop sign violator he returned to the area and looked all over for the animal but couldn’t find it. An hour later a member of the city staff received a call from the veterinary clinic that an elderly lady had dropped off an injured cat and was told the police would pay the bill on the cat. 1 Years Ago Two studies, into a fatal accident at Grand Coulee Dam, where Charley Sage oand Gardner Zemke died, found that the accident could have been prevented or minimized if certain safety procedures had been in place and followed. The uniformed police officer that walks the halls at Lake Roosevelt could be eliminated next year due to a dropping enrollment. She was born May 11, 1948 in Regensburg, Germany, to Robert Goerisch and Helen Hayes Goerisch. She graduated Mountlake Terrace HS (Edmonds, WA) in 1966. In 1976, she married George Lewis White. Grand Coulee Police 9/25 - A Nespelem woman was cited for failing to stop at intersections and for not having insurance. She told police she was in a hurry to pick up her children. - Plant Protection advised police that there was a van with California plates full of people at the 230Kv switchyard. Mayor suffers stroke Coulee Dam Mayor Greg Wilder reportedly suffered a mild stroke Monday afternoon or Tuesday morning, several sources said. He was taken to Sacred Heart Medical Center and is in good condition, relatives said, but he may require help to regain the ability to speak. 1 Years Ago Pit bulls and other certain breeds of dogs are now more expensive to keep in Coulee Dam and may be on the way to being banned altogether. The town council passed a dangerous dogs ordinance last week that named pit bulls as a type of breed famous for being aggressive and a fighter. The Raider Cross Country team was beaten Saturday by their own bus. Enroute to an invitational meet at Connell, the team bus broke down near Coulee City. Donna Mae (Shaw) Hamilton, passed away suddenly on Monday, Sept. 22, 2014, at Coulee Medical Center in Grand Coulee. Donna was born in Coulee Dam, Wash., on March 20, 1944 and raised by her parents Amos and Mary Shaw in Belvedere on the same property she was living at the time of her death. Grand Coulee Police 9/21 - Two suspects, one from Monroe and the other from Yakima, were arrested after allegedly taking three pounds of bacon, 6 ounces of pork seasoning and two half-gallon containers of orange juice from Safeway without paying for the items. Both are being charged with third-degree theft. The man from Monroe was also being charged with possession of a controlled substance. He was taken to Grant County Jail.
