  • Ferry Avenue tree plan moves toward spring planting

    Scott Hunter|Oct 28, 2026

A plan to replace trees along two blocks of Coulee Dam's Ferry Avenue is moving toward a spring planting, following a public meeting Thursday where residents weighed in on tree species, shade and long-term maintenance. Engineer Marissa Siemens of TD&H said the Department of Natural Resources-funded project is designed to plant 24 trees, with 12 planned for each block. Because the season was already late, she said planting would likely take place in early spring. The town plans to seek...

  • Business manager: money will be tight this year

    Scott Hunter|Oct 28, 2026

With enrollment still fluctuating, school board directors heard some gratitude and cautions from Business Manager Suzie Marchand Monday. Marchand said spending was far lower in September than it had been in the same month a year earlier, and she thanked the principals for that. “Now, if we can just stay with that throughout the year, we’ll be hopefully building up our cash reserve,” she said. Nevertheless, the district spent more than it took in during the month by $509,000, decreasing its fund balance by that amount, down from $2.1 milli...

  • Feds allege over 400 noncitizens vote in WA; Hobbs disputes data

    Jake Goldstein-Street, Washington State Standard|Oct 28, 2026

October 26, 2026 The top federal prosecutor in Seattle claimed on Monday that more than 400 noncitizens have been voting in Washington, as the Trump administration’s crusade against alleged voter fraud intensifies in the Evergreen State. Acting U.S. Attorney Charles Neil Floyd said in a press conference Monday that prosecutors haven’t charged any of the alleged fraudulent voters with a crime, but “I do anticipate that we will.” He’s asking the state to set aside their ballots for next week’s midterm election pending confirmation that they’r...

  • Living in this small town is great

    Judy Miles|Oct 28, 2026

Last week I went to our hardware store. I needed a part for a repair job. When I got what I needed, I also asked workers about the project, and I needed a referral to someone who could help me. They said, “We can help you!” In fact, the one fellow said he’d come out and help me. I was overwhelmed! He said, “This is a small town, lady. This is what we do!” I’m betting no one says that at the Home Depot in Omak, Moses Lake or Spokane. This is what makes living in this small town so great....

  • We see things differently

    Jim Catlow|Oct 28, 2026

“I tolerate my democrat friends and family but, you see it your way and I see it my way. I’m not you and you’re not me. You see Trump’s arrogance, I see Trump’s confidence. You see Trump’s nationalism, I see Trump’s patriotism. You hear Trump’s unsophisticated words, I hear Trump’s honesty. You see Trump’s racism, I see Trump’s words being misconstrued and twisted by the media daily to fit their narrative. You see Trump as a Republican, I see Trump as a Patriot. You see Trump as a dictator, I see Trump as a leader. You see Trump as an Autho...

  • Is it time to reshape the relationship between trained fire fighters and people of the land?

    Ron Crawford|Oct 28, 2026

I believe it is safe to say our wildfire season for this part of Montana is behind us. Having our first winter storm laying a heavy blanket of wet snow over this beautiful landscape our concerns put to rest for another season. We had many fires however most were controlled before developing into a huge devastating event. In Washington state, Grand Cooley Dam area, they had the huge Kaiser Canyon fire that burned over one hundred thousand acres. My wife’s family has ranched in this area for over four generations. This fire had the potential t...

  • Are you a Halloween etiquette expert?

    Danny Tyree|Oct 28, 2026

I had never really thought much about Halloween etiquette (other than “Don’t put somebody else’s elbows on the table, Igor”), but then I saw a clip of “Pittsburgh Today Live” featuring etiquette expert Liz Aquino. Aquino and the hosts shared some commonsense courtesy rules for homeowners and trick-or-treaters alike. Granted, they should have dealt more with “helicopter parents” taking a break from sports to micromanage their tykes’ door-to-door candy-seeking interactions. (“Hey, Smith, why...

  • This Week in History

    Oct 28, 2026

Election Day. In 1845, Congress passed a federal law designating the first Tuesday following the first Monday in November as Election Day. Prior to this new law states were allowed to hold elections any time they wanted, though within a 34-day period before the first Wednesday in December. That thinking was flawed, the potential for early voting results affecting turnout and swaying opinion in states and of voters who voted later. Why Tuesday in November, you ask. In the mid-1800’s about 70 percent of citizens were farmers, living far from t...

  • LR soccer moves on to tournament time

    Scott Hunter|Oct 28, 2026

The Lady Raiders are having an exceptional soccer month, tarnished only by their first loss last night of the month, their first this season in league play. The only game they hadn't won in October they instead tied, against 1A Chelan. They beat 1A Omak 3-2 on Oct. 17, then on Saturday wrapped up Oroville in a postseason game, taking down the sixth-seeded Hornets 8-0 at Grand Coulee. The LR win ended the Hornets' season in a game that saw two Raiders each accomplish a hat trick, the rare...

The Raiders won their senior-night football game against the Mabton Vikings by a large margin Friday night in Coulee Dam, 74-22. It was a big win for the team's last home game of the season. The Raiders, who officially asked WIAA last year to switch to an eight-man team after two years of finding it tough to field a full 11-man team, have not played a league game in 2026. They sport a 5-2 win-loss overall. They have two more games to play, one at Soap Lake Oct. 30. The last game will be at...
